It’s a muscle in your jaw. It can close your teeth with a force as great as 200 pounds on your molars.

TMJ disorder is a condition in which improperly-functioning jaw joints cause stress and pain in the surrounding tissues, including the muscles and nerves of the face, head, and neck.
These joints, called thetemporomandibular joints (TMJs), attach your lower jaw to your skull in front of each ear, and without them, you would not be able to eat, speak, or move your mouth at all. When the TMJs are imbalanced, injured, or inflamed, you may experience the following symptoms:
* Headaches or pains in the jaws, ears, neck, shoulders, and back
* Ringing in the ears
* Jaws that pop, click, or lock when you open or close them
* Difficulty biting
* Facial swelling
* Dizziness.

Poor postural habits especially forward head posture can lead to Jaw problems. As the head Migrates forward to Jaw tends to retract.

Complaint: Neck and upper back pain/stiffness mostly on the right side. 
In the first video notice her right shoulder hiking or riding toward her ear as she moves. 
This leads to overuse of the muscles at the base of the skull (causing tension headaches) as well as her upper trapezius which contributes to her neck and back pain!
Video #2 shows improvement following one treatment consisting of:
•Soft tissue release
•Spinal mobilization
•Two specific corrective exercises 
In the second video you can see that shoulders move in unison and the hiking of the right shoulder has significantly decreased.

Result: Improved scapular function and a reduction in pain and stiffness.

💪🏼 It’s because our bodies adapt to the stimuli we throw at it.
👨🏻‍💻 The same thing happens when we sit at a desk all day. Our bodies adapt to ALL stimuli, not just the positive ones. There is no selection bias.
What happens when we sit?
1️⃣ Spinal posture control begins to weaken gradually.
2️⃣ Hip and shoulder stiffness begin to develop to compensate for the loss of core control.
3️⃣ We become professional “sitters” and subpar “movers”. 🚶🏻‍♀️🚶🏼‍♂️👎🏼
So if you want to be a pain-free and happy mover, reverse the steps listed above.
🆒 Develop torso core control at the SAME TIME you put your hips and shoulders in safe, stretchy positions.
Spend more time engaged, and less time disengaged.
Stand taller and live longer, my friends 👭👫👬🙌🏼

"I always felt like my vision was bigger than the bigger picture...."
You can see the determination in my eyes.

I remember back then being able to close my eyes and starting to see glimpses of what my life could be like and it drove me to ACTION. I didnt have a clear plan but I was willing to just move..... and the most AMAZING part is that NOW even with my eyes open I am starting to see those same glimpses are now a reality. 
My challenge to you.....STOP WHAT YOU ARE DOIN...close your eyes.... and SEE the vision for your life and start taking actions towards it... no matter how big or small. Sometimes we get soo caught up in the fast pace and stress of the present that we forget the vision of what we are TRULY being called to do!

🥑 Flexible Dieting 🍫 
Use the tools available and the skills you’ve developed to fit food choices into your busy life. That’s what flexible dieting means to me. 
Today is my normal off from the gym so I ate a calorie heavy, balanced, lower carb meal for breakfast (see above 😉😝) before heading to this morning’s BNI meeting. Lunch was a BBQ sandwich with coleslaw and a small piece of cornbread, dinner will be on the lighter side at a BNI chapter event.

Tomorrow, I’ll workout (may eat before, may not) then will have a smaller breakfast before grabbing lunch @jasonsdeli with @michelbooh & @marypatriciameyer. Dinner will probably again be lighter.

Small meals, large meals, fasting, high fat meals, low fat meals, low carb, high carb, balanced meals and whatever else is packaged as THE solution for weight management can also just be used as one of your many tools to stay on track. The important thing is being able to make whichever plan you follow something you can stick with.

The number 1 Exercise You should be Doing - Kettlebell Swings- 👍

People tend to shy away from the Kettlebells. Some ladies might say, “That’s too heavy.” Guys say “I need to do some heavy deadlifts.” Don’t get me wrong. Deadlifts are a great exercise. But, Kettlebell Swings mechanically are perfect for teaching people the correct way to use their hips, core and overall body. And, you’re Deadlifting strength will benefit from doing them.

One thing to think about when performing a KB Swing is focus on moving your body and not the weight. A swing should be punched forward by the hips, not pushed slowly into place. A hip hinge and not a squatting movement. The movement should be ballistic in nature like a bullet coming out of a gun. There should a moment of acceleration followed by a coasting. This acceleration comes from the power center of your body, the core and the hips! Done correctly, there’s really very little overload to the spine. So, for those of you afraid to hurt your back, proper form will nix that idea. -
The Kettlebell Swing is great for building total body strength, power, and balance, while improving cardiovascular stamina as well as a an amazingly strong core. -

FITNESS TIP - Reverse lunges help take pressure off your knees 💪🏼 Anterior knee pain during and after lunges is incredibly common. You will know if you're suffering from pain verses discomfort - sharp, radiating pain that radiates through body tissue and is amplified by specific movement is indicative of pain.

The reverse lunge can be a great alternative to the forward lunge, while avoiding the anterior knee pain. NOTE: Just because it’s easier on your knees doesn’t mean it isn't still getting you a solid bang for your buck. You're still experiencing same training effect. 👍🏼

Little selfie action from last nights lift.  Who wants a reverse diet update?!? To give you an idea, it’s filled with veggies, lean meats, and cookies....all tracked because #balance.

I am loving more food and way more carbs, which I'll make another update on reverse later letting you know about that, but for now, I'll share last nights booty sesh (because everyone always wants those workouts!) I assure you that you will feel this the next day.  There are a lot of pauses in the lifts, a variation I like to do to help build strength.
.
It's really that simple, you pause during the lifts.  It causes your legs to have to work a lot harder, causing time under tension and making those bad boys WORK FOR IT.  Do them heavy, but not so heavy your form sacrifices of course.
.
Here we go:
- Pause squats 5x5 (hold the bottom portion of your squat parallel for 3 seconds before returning
-hip thrust with 3 second holds 5x5
- Nordic Ham curls - honestly I just did 3 sets of as many as I could do because these aren't easy.  Legit, I think I got out 5 or 6 at a time
- Bulgarian split squats with 3 second pause at the bottom 3x10 each leg (really focus on driving up through your heels!)
- Banded hip abduction (using my @glutegain bands of course - code Jenn10) - For these, I did 20 leaning back, 20 sitting upright, and 20 leaning forward.  They will burn.  Do it, then do it again.

☑️ Line up your ears over your shoulders and hips to minimize the effect of gravity on your spine.
☑️ The more your head protrudes forward, and your middle back rounds 🔜 the more pain and tension you develop along the neck and back.
☑️ Sitting on the floor with the legs crossed or spread wide out in front puts tension in the hips. Hip tension provides the spine a foundation to upright from.

APPLIED LEARNING. Pilates + strength mashups are my favorite!! Taking principals that I learn often outside or even inside the studio and flipping them on their head is so refreshing to me. I really want to rant right now, calling people out on their excuses of time, money, and so on....but I won’t.  I’ll refrain.  Just know you do have a choice.  You have the option of making better foods at home than you do going through a drive through. (Not that I’m above going through one - everything in moderation!  I mean, have you had the original chicken sandwich at Burger King?!? 😍)

Let’s compare my homemade McGriddle to that of the beloved restaurant of the arches....you know the one!  At the drive through, a traditional McGriddle costs $2.79.  My @pamcakespancakes mix is 15.99 (only $12.79 after my discount code FITMAMA) for 9 servings - also keep in mind that’s the most expensive option because you save even more with multi pack or tubs.  My liquid egg whites, a convenience product is $4.39 for 10 servings (technically 20 but I had two servings on this sandwich). My fat free cheese is $4.19 for 16 slices.  Finally, my @waldenfarmsinternational is $4.79 for 12 two tablespoon servings.  Most of this stuff I get on sale, so this is if you’re crazy enough to pay full price 😝

It’s so important to be in tune with your body and listen to it when something doesn’t feel right.

5 weeks ago, I started back into max effort sprints on a treadmill and hitting barbell squats again.

Just recently, I began feeling foot pain and having bouts intermittent limping. 
Because, I know my body well and always listen to it, I chose to be proactive and do a full 60 minute session dedicated to my feet with my massage therapist @dshealingmassage this morning.

Little did I know that I had damaged a flexor in my right foot and had the beginning stages in my left foot from compensatory movements that could have led to a much deeper issue.

Luckily, we caught it early enough where taking a break from the sprints and focusing on a wider squat stance will have me back to sprints and squats in less than 10 days with no problems.

Why share this, 
Because it is not uncommon to start a new exercise routine or phase and have these little injuries nag you. 
Speaking from much experience, being reactive to injuries usually causes a way longer recovery time, and way more of a hassle than you want to deal with.

Be proactive not reactive,listen to your body and be well, friends.
