It's National Honey Bee Day! 🍯 🐝 In honor of this magnificent day, I’ve teamed up with @honeymamas to share my top 3 favorite facts about queen honey bees! 🐝 Keep reading because we are also doing a giveaway where you could win a copy of my book Queenspotting and CHOCOLATE 😋 .
1. Queen Bees Are Not Rulers 👑
Although the queen bee can influence worker-bee behavior, she does not order the bees about like a monarch. The colony is actually more like a democratic system. Daily tasks and functions are controlled by pheromones and other chemical signals. When a conscious choice is made, such as a swarm’s selection of nesting site, the worker bees decide by voting!
2. Queen Bee Crash Diet 🍽️
In spring, bee colonies swarm—their way of propagating the species. Roughly half the population, including the queen, leaves the hive to start a new colony. Swarming is risky business. One challenge is that the queen must fly a long way, but she is a poor flier. To remedy this worker bees restrict her food intake prior to swarming. She must lose 1/3 of her normal body weight before she can fly!
3. A Royal Deathmatch 🥊
Typically, there is only one queen bee per colony. When workers make a new queen, however, they often make several, for the best chance at producing one that is strong and viable. The first queen to hatch will sting her unhatched rivals, killing them while they are still in their cells. If two queens hatch at once, they must fight to the death.
And finally... ❗GIVEAWAY ALERT❗ONE winner will receive a copy of my book QueenSpotting + an assorted 8-pack of Honey Mama's bars 🙌 Seriously, these bars are so good and they are made with real honey!
