Final Alice post for the moment! This is the image I submitted for a double page spread in an older fiction book. For this drawing I wanted to take the idea of the mad hatter's tea party and turn it in to an image of what could just be a girl playing in her garden. Maybe the animals and people are real, maybe they are toys and dolls. Some of the most powerful magic happens when a child is alone with their imagination ️ Full colour double page spreads can be unusual in fiction, but I love the books that fall somewhere between comic and book. David almond did a beautiful one years ago with Dave McKean, and the full colour images just added so much to the story.
Anyway, whether I win anything or not this project has been really meaningful for me, and I think that might be a win in itself. The prize is money, but more than that it's a chance to get constructive feedback from industry professionals, which feels like the next step I need to keep making more books. I poured myself in to these drawings and drew and redrew and drew again till I was happy. I liked making different versions of Alice and evolving away from the Alice I grew up with. I'm proud of these drawings. Alice has taken on a whole new life for me, and maybe I'll draw her more in the future. Thanks to @plum_agency
For this sweet little competition that I ended up spending more time on than is probably sane! I look forward to more in the future ️ Phew! If you read to the end, cheers 🥰.
