#cherrypicking 🍒 thoughts, with a #beer 🍺 in my hand and staring at #mthood .
I grew up in New Jersey, and u-pick farms was just.. a thing you did. Blueberries apples and peaches mostly. As a kid though, I hated it. It was buggy and hot. I was scared of bees, and I wanted to stay inside, read comics and watch cartoons.
Cut to today, 20 something years later- my career is about food and where it comes from. I write about it, and built my life around it. On my day off, ALL my wife and I wanted to do was get somewhere natural- with nothing manmade higher than 3 stories, lots of greenery, and good food.
I had more fun cherry picking today than I have in months, and We’re coming home with enough cherries for at least two pies. 🥧 🍒 .
Related- “Pie” cherries are what you think of when you think of “cherries”- nearly neon red, small, round, and perfect little bunches. They’re the cherries that appear on slot machines for some reason.
They are also pricier... because so few people buy them. They are incredibly sour when fresh... they NEED to be made into pie. You can’t just eat them like Bings or Rainiers.
So I had no problem picking a bunch for pie, while other kinds at the farm were picked clean. All the cherries were good... some just take a little more work than others.
