My therapist asked me once ‘What brings you joy? What makes YOU happy’ and i could think of nothing. 😔 ‘What about your children?’ And bang it hit me. I love my children with every part of me. I idolise them, i spend half my time fearing for them, some if not ALL of my negative obsessions are because i fear losing them. But do they make me happy? Im proud of them, i love who they all are, i look after them and support them. I love seeing them thrive, seeing them smile. But does that make me happy? No. Actually dealing with that kicked me into a complete and utter meltdown. What kind of mum am i? And then the negative thoughts come, because ive admitted they dont make me happy something bad will happen, to me or them or them because of me and here we go again the mental torture, the roundabout you can never get off of, swirling you around in this catastrophic hurricane of negative demons. BUT when the panic settled and i evaluated that question more i realised that not one person could make me happy. You cannot stand someone in front of you and say ‘this makes me happy’ we need interaction, memories, places to be and see and go.. it is this that makes us happy. My mind just saw the question ripped out the postives and presented it to me bare, so i saw nothing. My children make me happy because im interacting with them, sharing, creating, engulfing happy moments, be it at their school play, or on a trip or holiday, or if they read their first book to you, or if you have a girlie night. This is what makes us happy. And then the flood gates opened and i began to write everything that made me happy and before long the list was endless.... so to go from nothing makes me happy to oh my god SO much makes me happy is the perfect demonstration of how our minds and thoughts work. One of the greatest things in my recovery journey has been the strength in my spirit to get better. I have never accepted this as ‘it’. I have always sought a way to live and not be ruled by my negative thinking. I am holistically focused and practice reiki. It brings me immense joy to help others and im blessed by having the most angelic teachers who has helped me heal from a spiritual level and whilst i recommend this healing in many circumstances,  like for many others this is just not enough. I think of my brain like a state of the art pc that has simply been infested with bugs. The reiki acts to keep the outer casing of the pc clean, but the only way to clean the infestation is to reboot the harddrive and reprogram the system... how? How do we do that? CBT. Thats how. And if you go along and find a therapist like i did and you come out after a session thinking ‘what was that about?’ Or ‘im doing all the work here theyre telling me nothing’ well thats how CBT works. Naturally, we use social media and our phones for all kinds of things. Seeing picturea of family, send group messages - it's really useful. Super useful. When I was in school, at the last bell on Friday, I would speak to my friend quickly to confirm we were playing pool the next day at 11am in the town centre.⁣
That would be the end of the arranging to play pool. ⁣
⁣
Can you imagine that? No WhatsApp or SMS to confirm if you were still going or not. No Google Maps location sent. We just remembered, and took the bus there. We didn't even own phones to take out with us then. If one was late, we'd just stay at the waiting spot until the other one turned up. ⁣

BUT, times have changed. It's 2019 now and our phones are capable of incredible feats. I can read a book, play music, play games, watch videos, send messages, take pictures and videos, all on one sleek device. Gosh, anyone remember those shitty disposable cameras back in the day?! 😂⁣

So let's think hard. We have phones, which we use a lot. There's so much potential in how we can use these to better ourselves psychologically.⁣

Here's some tips to how we can make our phones so much more effective and powerful, rather than an endless distraction. ⁣
⁣
🔹Follow more accounts that make you think and inspire you to improve ⁣
🔹Block/ignore/mute any kind of thing /person which you feel doesn't help you⁣
🔹Download some 3 minute motivational speeches and play it through the day⁣
🔹Make a photo album of your most memorable achievements that inspire you to keep going⁣
🔹Aim to have more photos to put in that album⁣
🔹Schedule your game time and be disciplined with it⁣
🔹Download some meditation apps to teach you how to breathe and organise your thoughts ⁣
🔹Get an Auduobook of an inspiring book taht you can listen to⁣
🔹Get a good to-do list app so you can plan your day accordingly and feel the pride as you tick things off one by one ✔️⁣

Huge day for @maggiedoyne and @blinknoworg as they open the Kopila Valley High School.

This has been a 5 year project and it’s been awesome to watch it from start to finish.

-Guys it is well proven that Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a huge tool in the fight against an anxiety disorder, it has been shown to be just as effective as medicine!! Without any of the side effects!! alot of research into new forms of CBT have found that incorporating mindfulness and yoga in with CBT methods works even better. The next time you get a thought caught in your mind I want you to write it down, question the thought and it's validity, thoughts are known to be utter BS guys! Next to the thought you have wrote down I want you to put an alternative thought, one that could be more realistic about the situation, even if you don't believe the new thought just write it next to your negative thought. Continue doing this!! Whenever you take notice of your negative thinking and continue to counter act with alternative outcomes. This process is proven to reduce anxiety you are taking the thought from the mind on to the paper questioning the thought and coming up with alternative scenarios, therefore slowly teaching your brain that thoughts are indeed not FACTS! -
-Mindfulness is about being present in the moment, being able to recognise everything around you with all your senses and understanding why you feel the way you do by recognising and accepting the thoughts and feelings that come hand in hand. Yoga is a great form of exercise that not only helps relieve the physical tension that comes with anxiety it actually helps with negative thoughts nervousness and panic disorders by promoting you to become more mindful. Yoga uses relaxation techniques to achieve this sense of calm and tranquility.

We respond to situations and events with our mental filters: our thoughts & beliefs. In response to our beliefs, there are consequences (symptoms), i.e., our behaviours, emotions, feelings & physical reactions. ✨
This feedback response loop is in constant operation & not a linear A>B>C, rather they all influence each other. It can work in our favour, or it can work against us if we filter through negative perceptions & beliefs. Although these negative beliefs can be valid, & pop-psychology is now acknowledging “toxic positivity,” we need to find a practical balance between knowing what is & isn’t serving us.

An example of a negative feedback loop would be believing the thought “I need to be interesting in order to be valuable” in other words “I am not enough,” when you believe this thought about yourself & this thought is in the drivers seat, it may cause you to feel anxious, & you may seek activities that don’t actually interest you, or self sacrifice in order to feel included. You might avoid people & social situations, or you might develop unhealthy addictions. These are all symptoms of believing a negative thought.

Next time you notice this kind of distorted thinking, become a detective. You can ask yourself questions like:
• What must I believe to be true about myself in order to feel this way?
• Is this thought true? What is the evidence for this thought? What is the evidence against this thought?

People forget that mental health will determine a HUGE amount of how much you can succeed in all of your endeavours.

While currently the only thing I need to work on is a little self doubt (I think this arises for most of us?) I would rather read and have preventative tools should any larger more serious issues come up in my life.. 400 pages. Make some kind of plan that's out of the ordinary to change things up and give yourself something to look forward to and a change of scenery.

Meet one of our #therapists, Yasha Shine. She is a graduate doctoral student in Clinical Psychology (Psy.D) at Fuller Theological Seminary where she also received her Master’s degree. Her clinical rotations have included Alhambra Unified School District and Las Encinas Hospital where she provided #psychotherapy across age ranges, both individually and through groups and served high risk populations in need of crisis intervention and immediate care. In addition, she has experience administering #neuropsychology and personality assessments to adolescents and adults diagnosed with neurological conditions, namely #braininjury and dementias. Her doctoral research has focused on developing a #grouptherapy resource guide for first time offenders upon entering the prison system.

Yasha works primarily from a #CBT approach. She is experienced and passionate about supporting those coping with #anxiety, #grief and #loss, #trauma, and acute and severe concerns that prevent living a #holistic and healthy life.

Yasha is a Registered Psychological Assistant, supervised by Dr. Martin Hsia. She practices in the #Glendale office.
