Since the beginning of 2019 i have been involved with monitoring Hoiho on the Catlins/Southland coast.
Hoiho are THE MOST endangered penguin in the world. Being able to say that i have worked with these birds in the wild, as well as handling them and transporting them into care when needed is a massive milestone in my career, even in its infancy.
On the Otago Peninsula alone Hoiho numbers have dropped by 75% since the mid 1990’s, and population trends indicate the possibility of local extinction within the next 20-40 years. To witness a species i have worked with reach such a critical point is heartbreaking. Best believe this man is going to do everything he can to stop that happening. - 2 days ago
