Today’s #tuesdayssmithtip is achieving a Dark Patina Finish like I achieved on these earrings and bracelet.
Liver of sulfur is one way to get a nice dark finish. It is a chemical used to create depth and or give an antique-looking effect on your Jewelry designs. I love the depth it gives my work and how it highlights the design. You can purchase it in dry form, in liquid pre-mixed or in a gel. I use a gel
Using patina is simple and fun! If you haven’t done it here’s the process:
You start by setting up your area I get a glass jar with a lid for the mixture and two plastic bowls. One plastic bowl has plain water to rinse the piece in between checking the progress of the darkening. The other has water with baking soda in it for a final rinse because once it has reached the color you desire this mixture will stop the patina from darkening your peace further.
Then I make sure my piece is clean!
I use a toothbrush and clean with a little dawn detergent while wearing latex gloves to handle the piece. Any grease from your hands could cause an uneven finish. Next is mixing the liver of sulfur with warm water. A dark Patina can be achieved quickly by using warm water Be prepared! lt will be very smelly...like eggs Once it’s mixed drop your piece in the solution, checking every 30 seconds, rinsing in the plain water to view color. Put it back in until it reaches the shade you’re happy with! Now you can drop it in the water and baking soda mixture.
You can determine how much patina to keep on your piece; do you want a completely black piece or you would like it only in recessed areas and not on raised surfaces, if so those areas are usually polished, leaving the patina only where desired.🏻 Have fun with this! Next week I will talk about my experience getting some rainbow colors from liver of sulfur 🏻 - 9 hours ago
