I saw a meme saying, “There is no one as optimistic as a Mom who takes a book on vacation”. ⋒
Optimism is a requirement when travelling with kids. I had almost none on the weekend waving goodbye to Sade at departures, knowing over 16 hours of travel lay ahead for me and our little whirlwind toddler. Still, among the plethora of snacks, toys deemed quiet enough for a plane, a teddy bear, a dozen diapers, 2000-piece sticker book, a tablet with hours of kid shows and two changes of clothes I managed to pack a little paperback optimism. ⋒
Gideon slept all the way to Auckland. Our next flight he made it through an episode of Daniel Tiger before it was lights out. As he snored away in a makeshift nest of pillows and blankets, I grabbed for my book. The little icon of a plane inched across the Pacific, my little bit of optimism growing with every blip forward and every page turned. Gideon ended up sleeping 14 of the 15.5 hours of flying- even now I'm still in disbelief. ⋒
If you're travelling with kids from Australia or New Zealand to the States, you should seriously consider Air New Zealand. From the timing of their flights (later in the day), to the flight crews going out of their way for us the whole time they were incredible- I can't thank them enough for everything they did and the extra snacks.
Now- if anyone has tips for sorting out a jet lagged toddler, please send those my way! - 6 minutes ago
