Heavenly Creatures (1994)
I delayed the review of this film as their was little to say as I'm still contemplating my overall opinion. I was certainly not expecting what the film amounted to be and the tension that esculated throughout as the events unfolded! The film is based on thed true events of the 1954 New Zealand Hulme murder case (where two teenage girls murdered one's mother due to their parental figures attempts to seperate the two) and adapted from the diary extracts of one of the undertakers. 'Heavenly Creatures' effectively blends and dichotomises the fantasy realm constructed by the girls in which they escape the clutches of reality and the grooling realities of parental authority that bewilder them. I was fascinated by Jackson's portrayal of female 'friendship' and the gray areas that compile the girl's relationship, riddled with both fanaticism and infactuation to the extent of murder. Thus, the films acts as an exploration of adolescent sexuality, obsession and repression with some pretty strong performances from Kate Winslet and Melanie Lynsky in their debut film!
