Currently sat on a train heading down to Bournemouth for the 7s festival this weekend, if you don’t know about it, then google it. It’s worth it. Unfortunately I won’t be playing as my knee is still super dodgy 💀

I really think I’m getting to that cross roads where I need (and want) to pursue this whole fitness thing properly, and that probably means not playing rugby as I just seem to get injured ALL the time. Rugby is what got me into this, but this fitness/weightlifting/bodybuilding thing has just consumed me and has done for the last 5 years.

Not quite ready to make that move just yet (or at least not admit it), but we might be working towards seeing myself differently 💭

I’m all set for a 5K tomorrow morning in Liverpool. This was booked on an early bird deal straight after completing it last year! Last year was my first official chip timed race after completing the Couch to 5K Challenge with work and since then I’ve completed a couple more 5K races and four 10K’s. With a few charity runs thrown in. I haven’t had a run since the Liverpool Spring 10K and not overly excited by the medal on offer but I’ll go for a run out before Port Sunlight 10K in June!

Although an isolated armday is likely unnecessary once sufficient volume is accumulated on pushing (Barnett et al 1995) & pulling movements (Youdas et al 2010), if a bodypart is lagging (in this case arms) a “bro” style armday can be a very effective method to increase total weekly volume (& frequency) & thus potentially beneficial for additional hypertrophy.

Triceps: In terms of muscle fibre type, the tris are mostly made up of type 2 fibres (Gjovagg et al 2008) meaning that high speed/explosive style movements with heavy loads are a must in your training program. Usually the tris will be hit A LOT on all of your presses, barbell bench press in particular (Barnett et al 1995) however by moving your hands in to do a close grip bench variation you can MAXIMISE muscle activity of all heads thus a close grip bench seems to be the most “optimal” of compounds for the triceps (Lehman et al. 2005). Thereafter, isolations can help individually target each head with pushdowns (rope or bar) & dips (Boehler 2011) both emphasising the lateral head & overhead extensions (rope, bar, DB) targeting the long head (Boeckh-Behrens & Buskies 2000)

Took my girl @jessicakathryn through one of my fav booty workouts last night! She’s the opposite of me in that she can easily run 10 miles but rarely weight lifts. I gave her my extra, extra heavy OG GracefitUK band (now @b_ndstore) to use for some of it & she def felt the burn 😂

Its very easy to let things get in top of you and stress you out. If you feel like you need a break, take one. It doesn’t make you weak, or incapable of handling things. It just means you need 5 minutes to yourself ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Personally I always turn to music, but more recently it has been podcasts or audiobooks. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Take the time you need to relax, because your brain will only fire on all cylinders when it’s happy and healthy. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Ps: any podcast or audiobook recommendations would be awesome 👌🏼

Sorry if this is considered me "peacocking" But in light of my previous post I wanted to share something that I am feeling proud of. I've always been a very skinny lad and I've never liked it, especially after my surgery. So getting to this point is a massive deal for me. I didn't think it possible, but Im gain muscle mass!! If we put our minds to it we can do anything, I need to listen to my own preaching way more often

There’s 1 year difference between these two photos (Left: I’d been lifting 2&1/2 years, Right: 3&1/2 (now)) This morning when I looked at two photos of myself side by side I kind of beat myself up as I felt as though I hadn’t changed a whole lot.

HOWEVER, I then looked at the bigger picture. In the first photo I’d already been lifting for a substantial amount of time, so my progress was always going to be slower, I’d run out of ‘newbie gains’. Secondly, I have been wildly inconsistent with training this last year 😬 I had times where I let it consume me and it was all I could think about (think gymming twice a day) but then there have been other times where going to the gym was the last thing on my mind and I had weeks off. Also I was kind of chatting sh*t cause there definitely has been at least small changes.

All in all though I’ve seen a big change in how I view myself. I have less and less ‘bad days’ and feel a lot more confident, which I think is probably more important than the gains themselves 🤷🏼‍♀️ Also thank you to @nedfituk for cheering me up and helping me see the bigger picture x

The final part of my cutting 101 mini-series is focussed on training.👌🏼

Training during a cut should mimic your training during your bulk. You should still push for progressive overload and strength in order to maintain as much muscle as possible. This means high volume training, composed of compound and isolation movements. 
# 
One thing to watch out for is you recovery. During a cutting phase, our Maximum Recoverable Volume (MRV), coined by @rpdrmike, is reduced when compared to massing. This means that we may not be able to recover from the same volume that we would during our bulk. You need to watch that you are recovering properly in between sessions, or else you could start to see muscle loss due to excessive stress on the body 😬

Smiling coz my exams are finished. That’s 4 years of uni completed ✅

Uni has been great for my progress in the gym as that’s where I started training consistently, and now that’s almost 4 years of consistent training under my belt 🔨

Thankful for all the great friends made here, both inside and outside of the gym 🙌🏼

Although I probably made more progress on my physique than on my studies, ah well 😂

Now time to focus on the last 2.5 weeks of my cut, it’s time to bring my best physique yet 👀

PB&J Porridge 🍓🍓🍓My favourite flavour combination. Thick, creamy and soooo delicious. Heat 45g porridge oats with water or plant based milk over the hob until it starts to thicken, then add 20-25g of protein powder. I used @bulkpowders_uk vegan vanilla protein powder. Return to the heat and stir until the porridge is nice and thick, top with strawberry jam and your favourite peanut butter! Cutting 101 part 2 - MACROS🖊

Yesterday I covered calories required for cutting. Today, I want to discuss setting up macros to hit our calorie target. I will be using myself at  228lbs with 2300 cals as an example.
#
PROTEIN
- Protein should be about 1g per lb of body weight. So I will eat ~228g of protein. Protein has 4cals per g, so 228 x 4 = 912 cals from protein
#
FATS
- At least 0.3g per lb should be used to maintain normal hormonal health, but depending on preference, can go up to 0.5g per lb. I prefer to eat less fats and more carbs, in order to have more fuel for my workouts. So 0.3 x 228 = 68g. Fats are 9cals per g, so 68 x 9 = 612cals from fats

CARBS
- this is easy. Figure out how many calories we have left once accounting for protein and fats. 2300 - 912 - 612 = 776 cals. Carbs are 4cals per g, so do 776/4 = 194g of carbs. Easy.

This was not a refeed.
It wasn’t planned.
It was mental weakness and lack of restraint is all.
There’s a difference.

I’ve been feeling pretty drained my last few workouts so some extra cals will do me good going forward. I’m very food focused right now. All I’m thinking about is all the unbelievable food I’m going to consume after the 8 weeks is up.

The pancakes definitely took some of the focus off the food and back to the task at hand 💪🏼 Keep moving forward ➡️

I’m very food focused right now. All I’m thinking about is all the unbelievable food I’m going to consume after the 8 weeks is up.
