Day47 - White River to Old Woman Bay
115km, 770m ascent. 4206km total. (yes, sometimes I ride and brush my teeth. you're welcome)
Well, today was not the best day of the trip, that's for sure. I woke up wet, and rode in the rain for about 90km until it slackened off and the sky started lightening. I made the executive decision not to head into Wawa as I had enough food to get me through the other side of Lake Superior park. @chasingthesun2019 (and some other folks as well, I believe) told me to camp out in Old Woman Bay, so that was where I was headed this evening.
In Wawa, the sun came out, and the wind came up, but I was feeling alright - until I stopped to stretch my calves out. My ankles were feeling a little tense and sore, so I got off to stretch out a bit before any permanent damage was done. When I got back on, I managed to slip up in such a way that my leg got caught in the wheel, and it wrenched my knee sideways in a bad way. I felt a small pop, and since then, everything's been different.
It's amazing how fast you can go from being totally on top of your game to one step away from being unable to move. I hauled myself off the side of the road, and sat for a bit, feeling to see what had happened, and googling to try and figure out more info on how knees work. When I got up the nerve to try walking, it was mostly okay except for a weird looseness when my foot turns inwards. Great. Just great. There's not much pain, but after a lot of googling and research, I think I messed up an MCL - to be determined when a real doctor gets to look at it.
I haven't been attempting freemounts because they're a rather violent jump. Thankfully I don't actually need to get off that often, so I just make sure I've got something to grab onto before I get off!
I made it the last 20k to Old Woman Bay without much incident, keeping it nice and slow. Riding doesn't hurt, and I'll tape things up tomorrow when I have wifi to tell me how, and get to a physio as soon as I can.
One thing's for sure - I'm gonna get across this country if I have to crawl there.
