"When should I start cutting?" It's the beginning of spring and summer is just right around the corner! A question I've been getting frequently from my clients is when should I start cutting? This is a fairly individualized question but there are 3 other questions we need to ask first.
1️⃣ How much fat do we need to lose? 2️⃣ By when? 3️⃣ How does this effect your long term goal? I recommend cutting fat between 0.5-1.5 lbs per week it's a rate that is going to yield sustainable results and optimal results helping you retain as much hard earned muscle as possible. For example you're 200lbs at 15% body fat, 30 lbs of fat 170 lbs of lean mass. But you want to be 8% body fat for the summer. You'll take your end range body fat percentage times your lean body mass + your lean body mass. (0.08x170+170=184lbs) the goal weight is going to be 184 lbs which is a 16lbs difference. So you should give yourself roughly 16 weeks in order to reach your goal so start 16 weeks prior. Now for the last question, how does this effect your long term goal? This is especially important if you're main goal is to pack on as much muscle as possible, a caloric deficit is going slow, stop or even reverse the muscle building process, so keep that in mind when you're trying to figure out how lean you actually want to get. For some of you, it might be more advantageous long term to not cut at all and keep on growing 🤘🏼
