Decided to dance with the bench devil today on the return for a left minor pec tear and walk out of it me a minor in my right pec 😂 less painful than when I did the left but still not ideal! Feeling strong as fuck today too! Smashing out 180kg x 5 pause reps , 200kg x 3 pause reps and the 210kg before my pec went flew up easily! Not a bad start to the year :p

GOAL SETTING ✍🏼

The new year always sparks people to start thinking about goals, improving, bettering themselves. I personally don’t agree that you need to wait for a new year to actually make a change happen. Change should be constant, we should always be pushing ourselves, evolving, growing, learning and finding ways to be better than the previous day. But I do appreciate that a new year gives people MORE reason to set new goals for their year ahead. The trouble is, most of us have big visions but we give up after a month in. If this sounds like you here are some of my goal setting tips:
.
1️⃣ BREAK IT DOWN - think of the one thing you want to achieve the most, write it down.  Next think of all the little steps that need to happen in order to get closer to that goal. Pick 5 that are easily achievable and plan them in for the next 4-5 weeks. Block out time in your week to go through your goals and cross off small milestones. Slowly start chipping away at things and don’t think about the end goal. A lot of small wins eventually add up to the big one. Once you see even a little bit of progress your motivation will start soaring and things will get that little easier!

2️⃣ BE REALISTIC - you need to set yourself realistic goals if you want a chance in reaching them. Instead of saying you want to buy a house by the end of the year but only have $500 saved, do some basic calculations and figure out how much you can realistically save in 12 months. Then take it month by month and make sure you’re always putting aside the minimum you need to reach that goal. You may well save a whole lot more this way and be closer to buying a house than just giving up because you can’t afford it immediately and getting overwhelmed. .
3️⃣ BE ORGANISED!!!! I can’t stress this one enough. Failing to plan is planning to fail. You can’t expect to lose weight by winging it and having a salad and walking every now any then. PLAN your meals. PLAN your workouts. Every Sunday I book in when my workouts will be for the week and I prep my lunch. BE SMART and PLAN 👍🏼

Life has been so hectic lately, I’ve been quiet on the old Insta as I’m struggling to stay on the ball with everything. Work is crazy busy meeting deadlines, Instructing on the side and learning new releases, planning trips for next year, attending pre Xmas festivities on top of training and maintaining a clean diet has got me stressy 😓

Working the core with a plank challenge. How long can you hold this plank position for? I think back in the days I could do 3 or 4 minutes but now it’s around 2 😅

My goal is to create lean muscle which means burning fat and replacing it with muscle that doesn’t look bulky. A key to this is supplementing my workouts and recoveries with BCAAs. Branch chain amino acids help the muscles to repair themselves and my body to recover quicker so I can get back into training the next day 💪🏽💕

Mixing the new school videos with the old school videos to measure up to how I was in the past as I’ve found life and things that have been thrown my way has stopped me from really progressing like I should have... UNTIL NOW! 260kg x 3 deadlift and a 215kg x 2 bench press throwback. This deadlift is after a 200kg x 5 squat which I was wrapped with :). ———-

HAPPY FRIDAY! I got to the gym later than usual this morning, the rainy weather is tempting me to sleep a little longer than I’d like. Buttttt I made it and got 30 minutes done and dusted 💪🏽 When I have less time, I opt for things like sprints, hiit circuits or the stepper to get my heart rate up in a short amount of time. 💦 .
The @bpi_sports One More Rep pre workout also comes in handy when I’ve just jumped out of bed and haven’t had a chance to full wake up yet. Gets my energy levels up and ready for a good workout! 💪🏽

Tried my hand at 100lbs DB curls for the lols as it’s been years since I attempted this! With some moderate success 😂 I found by trying for strength in the occasional isolation movement it has helped in my bigger movements also. A lot of people neglect this in search for the pump. Thrown in a throwback 300kg deadlift for a double for self motivation leading into my next powerlifting comp come January 🤜

195kg x 5 on the squats yesterday. It’s been a long road for me with squats having suffered Osteitis Pubis in my younger days due to basketball and football leaving behind permanent damage. This prevents me from taking my stance wide. I think I have finally found what works for me and that is really getting stronger at slowing down the negative movement instead of just dropping straight down allowing myself to have my pelvic floor muscle tight therefor preventing any pain left from my OP. With this I can game my stance slightly wider than I have always been able to.

BPI TIP - DEADLIFTS 💪🏽

I’ve seen deadlifts done in so many harmful ways I thought I’d share how I teach the very basics for a BODYPUMP class. Of course you can take these tips and apply them wherever you may be performing deadlifts, especially if you’re new to the movement. .
1️⃣ Start with your feet hip distance apart, weight in your heels, knees are soft - not locked out.
.
2️⃣ Let the bar hang in front of your thighs (if using low weights) hands on the bar thumb distance from your thighs. Lift your chest and brace your abs. .
3️⃣ Hinging from your hips,  lower the bar toward your knees, keeping pressure on your thighs as you slide the bar down. Stop when you reach the top of your knee caps or just under if you can. .
4️⃣ Keep your chin tucked in - this keeps your neck and spine in a neutral position to avoid injury. Your eye gaze should be on the floor 2-3 meters in front. .
5️⃣ As you rise squeeze your butt to bring your spine back to neutral. Avoid squeezing so hard your lower back bends. Everything should be in a straight line and keep those abs braced!

I’ve touched on aminos many a time in my supplement oriented posts but that’s because I have never believed In the benefits of a sports supplement as much as BCAAS. HELLOOOOO! I’ve been a bit quiet the past week, having a little break from posting which has been nice. I’ve been crazy busy catching up at work and learning BODYPUMP tracks since our little getaway this weekend I’ve hardly had any downtime😅
.
Of course I have still be killing it at the gym, as I truly believe you will always have time for what is important to you 😉 Food wise, this is the first week in AGES we haven’t had meal prep for lunch, I feel a bit lost not knowing where to buy my lunch from 😂 but I’ve managed, and can’t wait for prepping meals this weekend!

I have also been keeping up with my daily dose of BCAAs and taking time to stretch and cool down. BCAAs are crucial for muscle recovery and helping that lean muscle build, especially if you do fasted weight training like myself. .
Here’s a little warm down circuit and my foam rolling routine (for legs) I do this once a week for about 20-30 minutes and it has helped my recovery immensely 👊🏼.

Love the beetroot powder added into this formula as research shows it can increase athletic performance in athletes due to high nitrate content that can increase blood flow and strengthen muscle contraction. It could also lower blood pressure. I remember reading up on this when studying sports nutrition and I also added beetroot to my last prep meals for #ifbb The power of veges!
