“No matter how far you have run, no matter how long you have been lost, it is never too late to be found”

Rene Denfeld is a new author for me and I was not disappointed. This book really pulled me in with a setting that was brought to life. The descriptions and atmosphere made me feel as though I was there. I could not personally relate to any of the characters, but I was able to really feel both for them and with them. They all have their own distinct and strong voices which you get through separate points of view. This story is very intense and difficult to read at times as it deals with physical and sexual abuse. The one thing I didn’t enjoy was this side job that the main character had taken that I felt took away from parts of the story. I was eager to see the conclusion of the story and felt the side job to be annoying and in the way. Overall I highly enjoyed this book and will definitely be picking up the sequel The Butterfly Girl when it hits shelves October 1st.

BOOK REVIEW || RECURSION 🤯 Wow... I absolutely loved this book! It reminded me a lot of the movie Inception. You know, the one that involves altering dreams to change thoughts and therefore actions? It was a TOTAL mind bend (I’d use another word but let’s keep it G rated) 🤣🤣
.
Synopsis: the story is told from two perspectives - a detective investigating an unknown disease known as FMS, false memory syndrome, where individuals start having two sets of past memories, blurring the lines between real and false - and a renowned research scientist, motivated to find a cure for Alzheimer’s, who creates a memory chair that has the ability to alter the past and therefore the future. How do their paths cross? What happens when you mess with the past, even to prevent tragedies?
.
It is an action packed, suspenseful story that was simply captivating. IT IS WILD! I read it in 2 days and was completely immersed in the story.
.
I will say, it did get confusing at times for me. There is a lot of back and forth between the past, present, and future. I also felt it *slightly* dragged in the middle. But other than that, it was awesome!! It really made me think of how our minds/memories work and how scary it would be we could alter past events 😵
.
Blake Crouch is a mind game master and this one did not disappoint!!
.
MY RATING: 9/10

Thanks to @jenriverabell for the beautiful post about B is for Breathe❤️🙂📚
Teaching our little ones to cope and explore their emotions is quite possibly one of the most difficult things of parenting mainly because most of us were not taught these things. That’s one of the reasons why I love books that talk about these topics. Not only are they really adorable and cute but also extremely useful, not only for children but adults alike.

On the blog today, my review of Jenny Colgan's The Bookshop on the Shore. .
There were so many perfect things about this book from the Scottish landscape to the slowly established romance (no insta-love here!). I have been wracking up on the good summer reads, and this one is no exception! .

Wishing this was my view right now. Instead, I am at school in my dungeon office with no windows… It’s not all bad though, I’ve finally started writing/editing a paper that I want to submit to a journal this year. I’ve been meaning to start this all summer… better late than never?

I am still in love with these @vintagebooks Russian Classics. The books themselves are MASSIVE, but the patters are so beautiful. I really do love the special editions that Vintage publishes. I just want to collect all of them! Do you collect special editions of books? What do you own more than one copy of?

I often forget that I own a book and end up buying a special edition (like Half of the Yellow Sun). I’ve managed to avoid buying too many duplicates. I really want the UK editions of the WInternight Trilogy though. I think I will treat myself to those when I go to England in the fall!

#qotd - have you ever been to a zoo??
BOOK - Animal Farm
AUTHOR - George Orwell
PUBLISHERS -Fingerprint!
GENRE - Classic
PAGES - 143
REVIEW - This was my first book by George Orwell and now I regret not reading it before.
What a masterpiece it is!!! 'All animals are equal
But some animals are more
Equal than others.'
Let's do an activity, replace the word 'Animals' with 'Humans' and read this whole line again. Relatable? Right?
This is what actually happening in the world.
Written in the 1940s this book explains today's scenario of politics and society.
The Politicians and aristocrats(here pigs) dominates the world and the common man (farm animals) have no other options but to follow their so-called leaders, or they are okay with their conditions and don't want to mess up their already messed up lives.
The message given by the book is strong.
As written in English (UK) it's easy to understand everything. The writing style is gripping. With each page, you will laugh and cry.
As the number of pages is less I was able to finish this book in one sitting.
Highly recommended to the youth.

Anyone else need to work up to reading certain long books?

Anything 600 pages or more and I feel like I need to choose carefully when I’ll commit to reading them. I took on The Killing earlier this year, it’s over 700 pages, after I kept putting it off even though I really wanted to read it 🤷‍♂️. Then I loved it so much and wondered why I hadn’t read it sooner. So I’m going to try and work through a few of the larger books on my #TBR list.

⭐⭐Okay, okay! this is the last time I moan about how nasty the cover to Under the Dome is. If you swipe left you'll see my faceapp improvements.
I buddy read this one with my good friend @teacupbookworld . It was our first buddy read together- and my god we were ambitious- but we got through it. There were many tears and blood shot eyes along the way, but it didn't stop us. Our sanity remained. I wasn't a fan of this one, and to be honest it is the first Stephen King book that I can say I really disliked. The 900 pages didn't seem justified. Every time a character made a plan it seemed like it took two chapters to figure out what car to drive (I'm over exaggerating here, but this is what it felt like). I liked some parts of the ending, Stephen King is amazing at writing chaotic scenes, but it wasn't enough to save me from my overall Dome-fatigue. The whole book felt like a chore. That being said, I loved The Stand that sat at 1300 pages, but I felt that story justified its length. Plus it had better characters. I can't say I liked anybody in this book. Two stars from me, I'm afraid. .

When we think of Henry VIII, we tend to imagine the intimidating figure in the 1536-7 Holbein portrait who was already on his way to becoming the murderous tyrant we're taught about in school. A man who ate mountains of food, changed the religion of his country for a woman & was fixated on producing a legitimate male heir. But he wasn't always like that. As a young man, the king idolised Henry V & set his sights on being a true Renaissance man. He was well-educated, spoke multiple languages, loved sports & hunting, put on performances as heroes such as Robin Hood to surprise his beloved queen, played & composed music, & dreamed of a great victory over the French for which he would always be remembered. What happened?
👑
In "1536:The Year That Changed Henry VIII", historian Suzannah Lipscomb examines the events of one particular year in comparison to the rest of the Tudor king's reign to see if there's any truth to the theory that 1536 was the turning point for his reputation. The book is split into 4 parts, each looking closely at different aspects of Henry's life & personality before coming to a conclusion as to their significance in this huge shift in representation & character. For example, "Crisis of Masculinity" discusses the issues of his physical appearance, injury & desperate need for a male heir to further secure a new dynasty, whereas "The King's Religion" considers the impact of the break with Rome on both the country & Henry's own beliefs.
📚
Lipscomb's analysis is clearly well-researched & thought out as she combines the opinions of other respected historians (e.g. Starkey, Elton) with contemporary accounts (e.g. Chapuys) & her own interpretation of the available evidence in a really accessible writing style. Whilst she acknowledges many accepted theories about the effects of accidents, religion & pressure to secure the succession on Henry VIII, she also dedicates time to challenging pre-conceived notions about certain actions - e.g. Was Anne Boleyn actually guilty or was the appearance of guilt enough to satisfy the king & manipulative factions in their aim? - &, most importantly, whether the definition of "tyrant" fits. 📚

#BOOKREVIEW *****
•Book: Poonachi •Author: Perumal Murugan •️Review : The protagonist is Poonachi, a black goat who comes as a fragile baby into the lives of an elderly human couple like a miracle, and the story follows the course of her life. The unnamed old man and woman look after the motherless kid like their own progeny, having been entrusted with her care by an imposing stranger they come to refer to as ‘Bakasura’. The narrative traces Poonachi’s growth into maturity, affectionately dwelling on her small helplessness and later unabashedly depicting her sexual awakening. Being a doe saves her from the cruel fate of neutering/ slaughtering/ sacrificing that is the lot of the bucks, but makes her vulnerable to the attendant tribulations of pregnancy and motherhood, whether it is the exhausting nurturing of her numerous kids or painful separation from them. Her status as a miraculously fertile, high milk-yielding, seven-kid birthing mother further victimises her. But in the midst of short-lived joy and prolonged misery, Poonachi snatches her little bit of happiness in Poovan, the gentle and loving buck she encounters twice briefly on ‘pilgrimages’ to the old couple’s daughter’s home. All of this is, in true Perumal Murugan style, unsentimental and earthily matter-of-fact, drawing attention to the helplessness of the female body and the multiple and violent demands on it, whether by nature, or the community. As the translator N Kalyan Raman summarises, this book, probably the first Tamil novel about animals written for adult readers.
•️Review : 4.5/5

Я СЧИТАЮ... 🤫 "Хижина" Уильям Пол Янг
==========

This book is so very, very important. And this isn’t just a book for educators, it’s a book for everyone who cares about authentic justice for underserved and oppressed American communities. Bettina L. Love doesn’t mince any words here. This is hard reading. Love does the necessary research as she covers the history and theory (bell hooks’ work is oft-referenced) relevant to the discussion of educational justice. This work also includes the data and numbers needed by advocates and “coconspirators” (as Love calls them) to formulate arguments and plans for disruption and reform at the local level. We, as educators, should be grateful to have this work—it provides us with a critical resource for our most important work in the classroom. Big #shoutout here to my true colleague and family member @dominique_will for reminding me to get this up off the stack and READ it in preparation for #backtoschool...

Sloane, Ardie, Grace, and Rosalita have worked at Truviv, Inc. for years and the sudden death of their CEO means their boss, Ames, will probably take over. For years there have been whispers about Ames and many incidents have been swept under the rug. When he makes an inappropriate move on a new employee, the women take it into their own hands to stop it. ⁣
⁣
I’ve seen many reviews in which the women are being judged harshly. However, hardly anyone mentions what a dirty creep Ames had been along with his abuse of power. Regardless of how anyone feels about the women in the book, one of the points being made is that women have to work a lot harder to be noticed or even treated as an equal. While men can get away with minimum effort and earn promotions. Yes, they made mistakes, but they shouldn’t have to face retaliation when they decide to end a work affair. The pressure they’re on is insane, “are you going to work after you have kids?” Making it seem that having kids may end their career or even get denied for promotions, making the women feel like they will no longer be reliable. No one asks a man that. Men with children are seen as “superheroes”’ while women must always be present without a reward. I think the book did a great job highlighting the differences in roles women and men play in the corporate world.⁣
