My colleagues and I have a list of protocols to complete, today. In addition to diligently conducting experiments, researching, mentoring youths and university interns, and performing extensive problem solving, we work to educate and persuade legislators to ban antiquated, unethical, and unscientific laws that demand and permit non-human animal testing. In short, these cruel animal tests are inaccurate when attempting to translate them into human physiological processes and diseases.
In modern times, we have more accurate, cheaper, more efficient, and ethical methods and technology (i.e. Organs-on-Chips, via microfluidics) to use in lieu of these cruel and inaccurate experiments. Thus far, we have been able to influence legislative parties to ban animal testing for cosmetic purposes, in some U.S. states. It is not our ultimate goal, as we want all non-human animals to stop being used and killed, but it is a good start; it took years and sacrificing our personal time - online and offline - to achieve this first step.
Many people have the misconception that all scientists are selfish, vile people who want to harm others, due to monetary agendas; many people have learned to fear us, due to science falling into the wrong authority or under irresponsible researchers in isolated incidents. A popular Anglophone idiom is "One bad apple doesn't spoil the whole bunch," which means that a small percentage of bad people or circumstances does not mean an entire group, industry, or other thing is bad or useless.
