I had a nice last few days through and around the East Cape with a couple of old men. I also tried out a new setup with a full kit of aeroebikepack bags letting me carry more than ever before. In June, myself, @chris_candypants and @the.happy.snapper will be attempting a six-day ride from Holyhead to Cardiff following the Lôn Las Cymru route. The route is 250 miles long and accumulates over 18,000ft of elevation, taking in all the beauty of Wales from North to South. Day 196: Oh the irony! I rather hoped that the next message I wrote would be one of continued optimism as I basked in the southern China sunshine As the noted philosopher, Mike Tyson said, “Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.” I thankfully haven’t been punched in the mouth but the conditions in the past week have been quite testing 🌧 A lot of that is because my expectations were not matched but also because the weather went from charming sunshine and positive momentum to consistent rain, thunder, lightning and crappy roads. I even had to adopt plastic bags over my socks in my sandals In the words of the great Flanders and Swann, Mud Mud Glorious Mud 🥳 It’s all part of the journey I guess and it’ll improve at some stage. Francesca Finds a Hobby, Chapter Seventy-Six: L'Eroica, circa 09:30 AM. The first rest stop! Knowing there were four stops along the route, the first of these seemed to take an awful long time to come around. It’d got to a point where I, and others, would ask fellow riders if they knew when the first rest stop was, the glaringly obvious question being WHEN CAN WE EAT?, and of course no one seemed to know. The spectators and photographers gathered in small groups by the side of the road would assure us that there was food just around the corner. I’ve checked on Strava and Radi was over a third of the way in, madness. By the time we rolled in and dismounted, the sun was shining, the sky blue dotted with white clouds, and our clothes for the most part dry. Despite being half nine in the morning, it felt like the afternoon. Time perception for me is slightly skewed when cycling, especially with such an early start. Here I learnt the first important lesson of the day: keep your race card in a plastic bag. A better place for it at the time seemed to me to be down the back of my knickers, there where it’d be exposed to not only my sweat but to every drop of water coming from both sky and earth, and, the minute I’d finally get a chance to relieve myself for the first time that morning: prone to falling straight into the portaloo toilet bowl. I rescued my race card, laughed at my naiveté and shoved it into my pocket instead. I was aching for a cup of tea, in that specific way in which one feels a complete assurance that a hot brew can renew all energy levels and abate any feint sensation of fatigue. There was food, wine, and vats of black tea sweetened with sugar and lemon which I filled my bidons with. I clutched in my hands bread and ham, cheese, fruit tart, and stuffed my face with carbohydrates as I enjoyed the colourful parade of old bikes and (mostly) old men. Aprendí a tomarme la gira en serio. Estando a menos de 100 km para llegar a los 10 mil las @guampasdelsur dieron el presente en Ko lanta. Fueron cuatro noches seguidas de tocar en diferentes bares, instrumentos y con diferentes músicos. De esta manera encontramos un refugio así poner la carpa, una barra así apoyar las birras y la canilla libre así seguir la gira. Dejo las playas atrás así encarar Bangkok! Francesca Finds a Hobby, Chapter Seventy-Five: L'Eroica, circa 08:30 AM. This is my favourite photograph from Tuscany. When I got my film back and saw this, I experienced a level of joy not far from the feeling of nearing the finish line, cheered on by the crowd in the ebbing light of that Sunday evening. Its splendour renders me speechless as I try to grasp how much more beautiful this landscape is than I remembered it. I’m learning just why taking photographs during my cycle rides is so important to me. For of that Eroica Sunday I can recall with vivid detail the sweet and crisp scent of the air, especially of early-morning pine trees, and the taste like nectar of the sweetened tea with lemon which I filled my bidons with; I can recall the feeling of comradery, the “allez allez”s throughout the day, the warmth of the sun on my back and the damp drizzle on my face, my woollen socks heavy with rainwater in my shoes, the ache in my wrists from gripping the handlebars, the thirst demanding to be quenched at the top of a steady climb, the slight tremble in my legs that persisted in the hours to follow. And I recall certain moments of the ride in which a landscape would present itself before me and I’d gasp, wide-eyed at its beauty, my heart filled with easy delight and that feeling of “ah, yes”.
