Ooh, I get by with a little help from my friends
Chains of bees like this are called “festoons”. Festooning behavior is associated with building new comb, though scientists haven’t nailed down exactly what it’s for. Theories range from it serving as scaffolding for construction to being a method for measurement (honey bees are meticulous architects and very particular about space); or even that it plays into stimulating wax production somehow. Maybe more than one of those theories are true simultaneously!
In this shot, I’ve opened a space between two combs to get a look into the hive and check on things. The bees don’t know I’ll be closing the gap in a moment, so they’re already beginning the work of filling it themselves. When I push the combs back together, the festoon will disperse and move on to other tasks.
