On our previous post we asked everyone to leave some bee/beekeeping questions
Q: Do you feed your bees in the winter ? Plus what insulation do you use if any ?
A : We do not feed our bees in the winter however we feed them heavily going into the fall. We try to ensure each hive has at least 80 pounds of stored honey for the winter. We use a similar product to the Beecozy wraps that are commercially available.
Q: where do they go in the winter ?
A: In the winter the bees stay in the hive, the bees form a cluster with the queen in the middle to regulate the hives temperature and relay on the stored honey and pollen as a food source.
Q: traditional hive or a flow hive?
A: The flow hive is a great idea for having a hive in your backyard. Although it allows you to get your honey without traditional extracting equipment. It still requires the same care and maintenance as a traditional hive, it is not an easy way to beekeeping which is a popular misconception.
