Fifty years ago today (or tomorrow depending on your time zone), a human being first set foot on another heavenly body. My memories of that day are a little fuzzy, as I was rather preoccupied with not yet existing.
I’ve sometimes wondered why the original lunar missions were named Apollo, as Apollo is a solar, not lunar, deity. I am glad that NASA has named the new lunar mission Artemis, after Apollo’s badass twin sister. She is actually a lunar deity and, according to most stories, was born first and, newly born, acted as midwife for her mother in her brother Apollo’s birth. Greek gods are wonderfully weird.
I hope for a future where humanity wanders the universe. Hopefully, when we do, we will still come in peace for all mankind.
