We were poking around the bushes of #Kommetjie #Capetown with Dick Metz to find the place where he used to camp with John Whitmore in the late 50’s and early 60’s to #surf the lined up reef break “Inner Kom” and the big wave spot “Outer Kom.” In the sunset darkness, we ran into an #Afrikaans family, who were curious why we were rooting around the front yard of their waterfront cottage. Any suspicions quickly melted away and we got the full on country welcome. They knew John Whitmore as the legendary “Oom” (Uncle) of South African Surfing. They were called the Huskissons, five generations of them had enjoyed those shores — early pioneers of the area, with a street named after them no less. They delivered us drinks with home grown limes and we felt like we had met friends for life. ————————————————-
Metz, in his original journey to South Africa, landed in CapeTown and was taken in by #Oom Whitmore, and family, on the back end of a ‘round the world hitch hiking tour (1958-1961). Upon returning home to Dana Point, California, he shared the news of this place and its potential for perfect surf with his friend & #filmmaker #BruceBrown . The rest was history as Bruce would return here to discover more surf breaks along this coastline. One near #jeffreysBay , named CapeStFrancis, would set the stage for the pivotal scene in his iconic film The #EndlessSummer — the break would be named “Bruce’s Beauties” in his honor. ————————————
My upcoming #featurefilm “The Discovery of CapeStFrancis” seeks to capture the transcendent spirit of #surfing — revealing the untold story of the Bruce Brown #documentary The Endless Summer.
