Most of us make our decisions from the same place..some our heads, some our hearts and some our gut. Of course we may sway or use a combination of the three but, for the most part, we have one that seems to be dominant. I was trying to figure out which is my most dominant. At first I thought it was my heart because I’m known to be more on the emotional side..so I immediately said heart. After actually recalling and imagining several decisions in my mind I realized it’s my gut that drives my decisions in the end. I get a feeling, a sense, something in my body that just knows..and sometimes until I get that feeling I often just won’t decide. It’s quite interesting how much we rely on these little things. Sure I throw logic in the mix and my heart always wants to have a say..but in the end..I already know the answer.

Yesterday was a holiday here in Ontario, even though I still taught a few classes in the morning, I still made a point to give myself a lazy day afterwards. I think it’s so important for our stress and emotional wellbeing to have days to just be lazy, days without responsibility, tasks or chores. Even though I had a million things to do, I put on comfy clothes and went to girlfriends place, we talked, enjoyed a beverage, watched movies and ate comfort food. Today, I have more clarity to get the tasks on my list done👌🏼

So I’m reading this book, and the most recent chapter spoke about control..and how it robs us of our happiness. We seek to control the outcomes of our situations and allow that outcome to become the source of our happiness rather than the situation itself. The author used the example of playing a game of tennis, and how if you become so wrapped up in the win providing you with that happiness, the moment you begin to lose you are no longer happy. If you simply enjoyed the game, the present moment, each swing, each near miss, each near win, there would be no need for the outcome to matter. We try to control our relationships, thinking if we’ve been hurt in the past we can control it from happening again by resisting getting serious with someone new, instead of preventing our pain we are preventing our pleasure. Even in any exchange or conversation we become so consumed by the need for the other party to see things how we see them or control their reaction to our apology, our explanation, our beliefs..it robs us of simply being present and happy without the need of external sources or outcomes. The truth is that control is an illusion, we either wish for the past to be different or the future to go a certain way and believe that our happiness would be possible if those changes were possible. But we can’t control those things, we can do everything right and calculated to get to that outcome but there’s never any guarantees..it’ll never be how you picture it to be or pictured it to feel. There is no control... It even goes into depth about how it affects us as a society, diving into war, politics and religion. After this chapter I put the book down and decided to spend a full week being aware of my need for control and trying to stop it in its tracks and simply be present rather than looking to an outcome. It is not easy, and won’t happen overnight but I love to keep opening my eyes to these things even just the ability to just let go, in an argument and realize I can never ever get someone to see exactly what I want them to see or understand, is just liberating..surrender is happiness, not control🖤

I’ve been workin on that slowwwwwwww dropback ..there still always that point where gravity takes over and I lose the controlled drop but..it’s gettin closer and closer to me just touching down gracefully🙆🏼‍♀️

Today has just been one of those days..feelin mega off and just not myself🤷🏼‍♀️ I’m doing my best to roll with it. 
I’m about to head into crazy cleaning mode, that’s my go-to self care. Face mask, hair up, Friends playing in the background and meticulous tidying/re-organizing. Clear space gives me a clear mind.
How do you self-care??

I'm not sure where this thought came from but it just came... I guess. I've always set my mind on circuit or bodybuilding training. Yoga was always in my heart but my mind would always brush it off. I listen to @thebalancedblonde @tbbpodcast for the past two years. I bought her Soul on Fire Yoga ebook. What made me buy her ebook was Jordan herself (the human she is ) and the fact the title of her ebook is Soul on Fire Yoga. Let your soul be on fiyaaah. The way she talked about yoga, made me convince that yoga is for me. I think that moment in time, I was exhausted. I was tired. I had no energy. I've always thought this Projector could go really strong until I felt that burnt out. Burnt out, I was. I came to a point I didn't know what to do. NOW, I know what it means to be a projector. I have to take things "slowly". Day by day learning from @jennazoe. I love her page, there are so many information provided there. I could write a whole essay but I will stop here.

❌Super common error in long plank is looking up, which inadvertently affects your body positioning, usually causing you to spread the shoulderblades and arch the back, which also take the glutes out of the mix. In long plank the pelvis should be in a PPT (Posterior Pelvis Tilt) aka tailbone tucked, the glutes tight and active scapula and serratus anterior. ..

Today’s theme for #yogisfightcancer ..this to me is about healing and moving forward..post-fight. Both emotionally and physically. If you’ve won the fight, making positive steps toward a healthier future, ensuring this battle has also been a lesson. Perhaps also healing from things you you lost, depending on the severity and type of cancer, the surgeries you must endure can leave you without breasts, bowels, limbs, vision...healing from grief of those losses, celebrating the gift of the life you still have, and working towards feeling whole again, is a process in itself. Healing for the family members who were there fighting with you and self care for all involved matters too. But the unfortunate truth, is sometimes the heal after the fight..that was lost..healing for the ones left behind. Those left to tell the stories of bravery and strength during the fight..but mostly to let our loved ones lost be defined by more than the disease that took them..letting their memory forever change the person we are, letting them live one through those things we learned from them, those memories we had with them and to fight today through initiatives like this, for a better outcome one day, for those who will come after us🖤

Today’s theme for the #yogisfightcancer challenge. The fight, is the true challenge..not only a physical battle..as an equal toll is taken on the mind/emotions and the spirit. It can raise questions of faith, it can thrust you into depression, it can make you sad, angry, defeated, it can be equally as emotionally exhausting as it is physically. I am no position to offer advice, as I’ve only been a bystander to the fight. I can only hope that those who come to fight the fight will do so with strength, of mind, body and spirit. Fight with courage, with grace, with hope and with belief..But also with honesty, no one expects you to always “stay strong”. Sending healing energy and love to all those fighting the fight💖

Today’s theme for the challenge is prevention, and while I spoke about learning about the causes of cancer in my last post, this is more of a call to action..we know there are things we can do to help reduce our risk, yet we still take the chance. We know all the chemicals in processed food is no good, we know the excessive sugars we eat are no good, we know that smoking & alcohol increase our risk, we know about the harmful plastics or the negative effects of inhaling the fumes in our cleaning products. But for whatever reason, we grab that frozen box of food made from ingredients we can’t pronounce, we fail to wear gloves or mask while use those cleaning products, we drink from that plastic bottle of water that we left in the car, We smoke that cigarette, we have that 5th drink.  I’m just as guilty as the next guy and I am not suggesting we live in a bubble or deprive ourselves. I just think we should do what we can, where we can and when we can. Moderation and balance to try and help tip the scales in the right direction, small steps can become small habits which can become second nature. At the end of the day, I truly believe if it’s going to get you, it’s going to get you, no matter how healthy or cautious you are..but, if there’s a small chance we can change that, or affect how soon, how fast, how bad..I think it’s worth taking action. Today’s theme for #yogisfightcancer challenge. Until it came to our doorstep, I never really knew too much about cancer besides how scary and powerful it was. Of course at that point I learned everything I could about the disease and potential causes because I was baffled by how it came out of nowhere. As treatment began I learned about threats that help it grow and spread and things that are known cancer fighters that are easy to adapt into our routines like Tumeric! Feb 4th is World Cancer Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness as well as encouraging prevention, early detection, treatment. I will be joining the #Yogisfightcancer yoga challenge which starts today. I will also be giving away a FREE private in-home restorative yoga with hot stone session to someone in treatment or in recent remission. (Scroll down for details)

From I’ve read so far, every other yogi taking part in this challenge, has told a story about how they have been affected by this disease..whether directly or indirectly..everyone has a story. The truth is we will all face it at one time or another. It’s...insane..the probability is now around about 45-50% depending on your gender..you can basically flip a coin on whether or not it will be you..and if it’s not..it’s a loved one. I’ve personally had two people I love fall ill with this disease, one of whom, did not survive. Watching someone you care for slowly wither away and having no way of easing their pain is gut wrenching. Think smart, drop this “it will never happen to me idea” because the odds are against you. Stop worrying about getting in trouble at work and just go get that specialist appointment you’ve been putting off, watch what you put in your body including negative emotions and stresses because even though the evidence is scarce, evidence still shows stress can have an effect. For those recently diagnosed or those dealing with the news of a diagnosis of a loved one, remain strong, remain optimistic and keep fighting.

Happy Super Bowl Sunday!
I went to the grocery store yesterday and it was worse then Christmas lol people we actually double parking, I had to park at the next plaza over. 
Maybe it was a coincidence but people are crazy 😝 
I think it’s supposed to be above zero today so I’m excited to see if I can get out to the lake for some snowga⛄️⛄️

Day 9 of #alowinterwarriors and part 9 of my warrior story.
After these events, things started to change tremendously for me. I decided that year was going to be the year of yes. I made a promise to myself that anything anyone suggested or asked me to do, I was going to say yes to no matter how scared or anxious it made me. That year I joined the debate team. I went to debate tournaments and public speaking events. What I found, is that all of these magnificent speakers and competitors, that I held at a high standard, were just as scared as me--there I realized that I was not alone. For once in my life I felt like, even though it scared the crap out of me, this was something that I wanted. If they could do it, so could I.  I went out on a limb day after day to try and overcome my anxiety--it wasn't easy, it was really hard--but I kept pushing. Today, I'm a communication major, I tutor for public speaking and human communication courses, I'm a yoga instructor, and I help other people overcome their fear and anxiety. Never in a million years did I ever think I was going to be doing this, but somehow this is where my journey has led me on.

Is this you?? Take a photo of yourself in downdog and see if you’re practicing smart👌🏼
If you want both flexibility and strength from your downdog, your pose cannot look like the one in the bottom left!!🙅🏼‍♀️❌ Besides strengthening the arms and legs, calming the mind and reducing stress downward facing dog is an amazing STRETCH for shoulders, hamstrings and calves.
Too often I see students who want their heals down so bad that they shift weight forward, round their back and squeeze their shoulders in order to do so. This loses almost ALL the main stretching benefits out of the pose! The rounded back tilts the pelvis, reducing the stretch on the hamstrings (even though the legs are straight!) The shoulders shrug up to the ears and the shoulder blades are squeezed together, instead of getting the stretch their supposed to!
If this is you, here’s how to modify:
• Equalize the weight between arms and legs
• Stretch out the arms, chest and shoulders by reaching the spine long and drawing the sitting bones back and up
• Bend your knees as much as you need to as you are pressing back and even allow your heels to remain lifted • You’ll still be getting a stretch on the hamstrings even with the knees slightly bent
• Add a bit more when you’re comfortable by walking in place/pedalling your feet. You can do this by alternating legs, slightly straightening one at a time while the other remains bent, increasing the stretch on hamstrings and calves.

As your flexibility improves you’ll be able to straighten the legs more and more!

CHATURANGA: The good, the bad and the modified!
So quick story, I actually seriously injured my shoulder doing these incorrectly when I first began practicing, my ego was in charge, I thought I was a champ and It ended up costing me big time! It got so bad I had to take time off from work at the dental office because of the pain! After rest and rehab I changed my tune and started modifying until I strengthened my triceps and core enough to support the full version.
Remember to always stay safe, especially in these key poses that we use every single practice! Trying to push forward before you’re ready will only end up setting you back further. Lose the ego, pick up the positive attitude👌🏼☺️

Back bends aren’t just back bends!! Look at the difference in my quad and hip flexors from the two photos! Relatively same curvy spine, but farrrr different pose! This is one of my fave things about documenting my practice, is self assessment and self improvement. I started my practice at home and used this method for the first year! So it’s become second nature for me, and the bonus, is that since I’ve been documenting so long, I get to see the transformation😍#tbt

Soo I injured my left knee yesterday during my winter yoga by the lake😒 I alternated hot/cold packs all night (as if I knew this was the right treatment lol) but this morning I woke up with it mega stiff and sore😣 I warmed up properly but I was in a half lotus bind in side plank and lost my balance, tugged on the foot in the process put strain on the knee..it even made a little pop/snap sound😱😫 I’m limping around, but still practicing, everything except pigeon and cross leg feels ok. Going relatively easy on it and hoping to visit the doctor today or tomorrow. Hoping it heals up quick🤞🏼🤞🏼

Day 8 of #alowinterwarriors and part 8 of my warrior story. 
Around the same time that my public speaking class was coming to an end, my yoga teacher training was coming to an end as well; which ment In order to finish my certification, I was going to have to teach in front of all of my classmates. I was nervous, petrified, and I came up with every reason in the book to why I wouldn't be able to teach. But  I knew, they were all excuses for me to try and run away from something that was really scary to me. So, it was time again, to suit up, and face that big scary tiger. After all, this was the whole reason I even took my public speaking course!!! It was now or never. When It was finally my time to teach, everything that I had practiced, had completely escaped my mind. But this was not new to me, this is what my anxiety had always done to me. So, I closed my eyes and reminded myself that I had been here before,took A deep breath, and whispered to myself you've got this.  As I began teaching, It was almost like I was only person in the room. The words just flowed out of my mouth, and before I knew it, i was finished. All of the anxiety that I had before I started had completely vanished. And again, as I looked around, that tiger was backing off in to the shadows. As I looked him in the eye, I knew that I had the key to defeat him….

Day 7 of #alowinterwarriors and part 7 of my warrior story.
The process was strenuous, but before I knew it, the speech was no longer about getting a good grade or passing, it became a journey of proving to myself that i was capable of doing it! Speech day came, and boy was i nervous. The continual chatter of self doubt kept beckoning my thoughts, but I got up there, in front of the class and gave my speech. It wasn't flawless, or perfect, or some monumental speech that you may be expecting from this story, but the point is I did it! I gave it my all.After I finished, the response that I got from my peers and my professor, was more than I had anticipated-- I couldn't stop smiling. The feeling that I had in that moment was unlike any feeling I had experienced. I did it, I was alive, and I didnt die! It was then, in that moment, that I looked around And that BIG SCARY TIGER, that followed me everywhere, had slowly began to back off. 
Facing your fears can be one of the hardest things that you will ever have to do, but overcoming your fears is one of the most gratifying experiences that you will ever have. Though I had completed the class, my work was not done....

I love these outdoor sessions I get on the weekend with daylight and nobody else around. I'm not as flexible as I was last year, but it's so hard to keep up with everything I wish I could do! it’s not my priority right now so just trying to maintain. ➡️ full 60 second headstand at 4x speed! the breathing motions are interesting to see hehe

I  just love it when my back does that cute little back fat fold😍
🙃 So sarcasm is clearly my kind of humour, I went to Jiffy Lube the other day and the guy asked “are you here for an oil change?” And I joked “no I’m here to get my nails done, do you have time for a mani/pedi😜” ... he just gave me a 😐 face and said to pull into the first garage. I wish he laughed though, I usually get a good response for those😅 
I think the worst ones are when I’m sarcastic through text..you can imagine how that goes haha🤣

Day 6 of #alowinterwarriors challenge and part 6 of my warrior story.
To take control of the situation, my first step was going to be conquering my fear of public speaking. So, the following semester I signed up for, you guessed it, Intro To Public Speaking.
While I understand that public speaking is a pretty common fear amongst most of us, walking into that classroom on the very first day, felt like I was plummeting to my ultimate death!! Every inch of my body was telling me to RUN--but I didnt of coarse:). In the class, we would have weekly speaking exercises, and on those days half of the class usually wouldn't show up, but I knew I had to. My hands would shake, I would stutter, but I kept pushing myself to do it. For my very first formal speech, I failed miserably. But instead of giving up, I pushed harder. I met with the professor weekly to practice my speech, to go over the outlining and formatting, and to make sure I was on the right track…..

Day 5 of #alowinterwarriors and part 5 of my warrior srory.
After adjusting to school and progressing through my first and second semester of school, I continued practicing yoga. I would go to classes, watch at home videos, and even started creating my own practices--it just felt so amazing to me, that I literally felt like I couldn't get enough. Shortly after, the opportunity presented itself to me to sign up for a 200 hour teacher training course for Prana Vinyasa--It was kind of a spur of the moment/ last minute decision--but I knew I had to do do it. Ecstatic, I went home to tell my Loved ones, and the support that I thought I was going to get, was not there. Though my Mom seemed to be supportive, she made a comment that cut through me like a knife: "April, how are you going to be able to teach yoga when you cant even carry on a conversation without getting nervous? You will be standing in front of a whole class of people, just staring at you." This comment stopped me cold in my tracks. The excitement that I had, had completely vanished. Day 5 of #alowinterwarriors and part 5 of my warrior srory. After adjusting to school and progressing through my first and second semester of school, I continued practicing yoga. I would go to classes, watch at home videos, and even started creating my own practices--it just felt so amazing to me, that I literally felt like I couldn't get enough. Shortly after, the opportunity presented itself to me to sign up for a 200 hour teacher training course for Prana Vinyasa--It was kind of a spur of the moment/ last minute decision--but I knew I had to do do it. Ecstatic, I went home to tell my Loved ones, and the support that I thought I was going to get, was not there. Though my Mom seemed to be supportive, she made a comment that cut through me like a knife: "April, how are you going to be able to teach yoga when you cant even carry on a conversation without getting nervous? You will be standing in front of a whole class of people, just staring at you." This comment stopped me cold in my tracks. The excitement that I had, had completely vanished. Probably my favourite throwback EVER! Haha how amazing is it that I proudly posted that top photo four years ago!? At the time THAT was the accomplishment! Just like my feed is now, I chose the very best photo to post, my best outcome of the pose from my practice that day. Looking back I laugh a little, especially this face plant of a chest stand but, it’s pretty spectacular. My fave thing about it all is that I love my practice as much now as I did then💘

Sería otra persona completamente diferente si no practicaría yoga, porque la forma en que esta disciplina me ha amoldado para ser lo que soy hoy, y esto ha sido algo extraordinario. .

El respirar profundo ante cualquier circunstancia para apaciguar los impulsos de una mente que a cada rato me sabotea mis instantes, lo aprendí a través de mi práctica de yoga.
.
El oírme y conocerme más a mi misma, amarme y procurarme inmensamente, cuidarme y abrazarme reconociéndome tal y cual soy, aceptándome con todos mis defectos y con mis virtudes, me lo afianzó mi hermosa práctica de yoga porque cada día que estoy arriba de ese tapete respirando y conectándome conmigo misma por durante más de 1 hora es cuando, de forma más consciente, me suceden estas cosas, y al hacerlas repetidas por tanto tiempo ya forman parte de mi vida como un hábito. .

Beim Yoga wird der ganze Körper und jeder einzelne Muskel mit einbezogen. Damit du die Asanas halten kannst, musst du dich voll und ganz auf dich konzentrieren. Du nimmst deinen Körper bewusster wahr und lernst, die Stärke, Flexibilität und Mobilität deines Körpers zu lieben. Es geht dabei nicht ums aussehen, sondern um dich. Es geht nicht darum andere zu übertrumpfen. Es geht um deine Fortschritte. Darum, dass du dich wohl fühlst mit dir und deinem Körper.

Sometimes all you need is to try, try and try again. One day you'll succeed and that day you'll learn that the most important thing is to believe in yourself and walk the distance. That's a warrior to me - one that keeps trying even when it's hard.

I never got to finish the #ALOWINTERWARRIORS challenge because of the flu. So here is the last pose. A pose that makes me feel like a warrior, because I did try and then again and again until the day I succeeded. And I learn a lot in the process.

Day 10 of #alowinterwarriors is a pose which makes me feel like a Warrior 💪🏼. This is know as #retreatingwarrior I really like this #skandasanavariation It does make me feel like a  Warrior, in retreat, but ready to meet the challenges, and no giving up. What is a Warrior?  A Warrior is tenacious, steadfast, confident, courageous, noble, undaunted, loyal, resilient and loving. 
My concept of a Warrior has been someone who is fierce in battle, tenacious, steadfast, resolute, courageous, fearless, strong, heroic, and resilient. My concept was formed through literature, movies, and TV many years ago. I think the Warrior poses well represent this, especially Warrior 2, by its look and execution, I.e., the engagement of all the muscles. I grew up playing Cowboys & Indians, as well as Army, and we were all warriors in our heads💪🏼😊. Of course, life has taught me that this is a rather narrow view of what a Warrior is. The majority of us don’t have to physically fight other people. But we are willing  to  courageously stand up for ourselves when others try to abuse, bully or intimidate us or our more meek loved ones. Some of us tenaciously battle diseases or injuries. Some battle with their emotions or drug addictions, battles requiring courage, resolve, and resilience. There are many among us who are warriors for various causes, courageously, heroically, and steadfastly acting to promote and achieve their goals, not for themselves, but for whole of us🙏🏼. Gosh, I have so many things in my head that exemplify Warrior behavior and characteristics. I’ll try to distill it😊. A Warrior is one who courageously (overcoming fear, real or imagined) acts, lovingly, with conviction and purpose for the benefit of another, others, or the community, and who persists in the face of adversity, or for himself/herself to protect his/her integrity or to better himself/herself. Sometimes, it’s enough to just show up every day, being ready to take on the mundane routines of living, and being supportive of those who need it. My concept of a Warrior has been someone who is fierce in battle, tenacious, steadfast, resolute, courageous, fearless, strong, heroic, and resilient. My concept was formed through literature, movies, and TV many years ago. I think the Warrior poses well represent this, especially Warrior 2, by its look and execution, I.e., the engagement of all the muscles. I grew up playing Cowboys & Indians, as well as Army, and we were all warriors in our heads🏼. Of course, life has taught me that this is a rather narrow view of what a Warrior is. The majority of us don’t have to physically fight other people. But we are willing to courageously stand up for ourselves when others try to abuse, bully or intimidate us or our more meek loved ones. Some of us tenaciously battle diseases or injuries. Some battle with their emotions or drug addictions, battles requiring courage, resolve, and resilience. There are many among us who are warriors for various causes, courageously, heroically, and steadfastly acting to promote and achieve their goals, not for themselves, but for whole of us🏼. Gosh, I have so many things in my head that exemplify Warrior behavior and characteristics. I’ll try to distill it. A Warrior is one who courageously (overcoming fear, real or imagined) acts, lovingly, with conviction and purpose for the benefit of another, others, or the community, and who persists in the face of adversity, or for himself/herself to protect his/her integrity or to better himself/herself. Sometimes, it’s enough to just show up every day, being ready to take on the mundane routines of living, and being supportive of those who need it.
