Herbert Mhlanga's "a mother's burden"
This piece, in an unusual quartz variation we call Naartjie Unakite, represents a woman whose husband left her in Zimbabwe to look for greener pastures in a foreign country. She is worried about how she will manage to look after the family all alone. Now her children need food and school fees, but their father has not yet managed to send resources from the diaspora. More broadly, this piece represents how a mother treasures her children and their father. Mhlanga emphasizes this sentiment in the heart shape of her neckline which continues into the base of the sculpture. - 5 hours ago
