Eight-year-old Tanitoluwa Adewumi, a Nigerian refugee in US and chess player, has said that he wants to be the youngest Grandmaster, after winning the chess champion for kindergarten through third grade at the New York state chess championship.

Adewumi’s family fled northern Nigeria in 2017, fearing attacks by Boko Haram terrorists on Christians such as themselves. “I don’t want to lose any loved ones,” his father, Kayode Adewumi, told me.

So Adewumi, his parents and his older brother arrived in New York City a bit more than a year ago, and a pastor helped steer them to a homeless shelter. Tani began attending the local elementary school, P.S. 116, which has a part-time chess teacher who taught Adewumi’s class how to play.

Adewumi really enjoyed playing chess and asked his parent if he could join the chess club. Of which he did, though his parent could not afford the fees as the family was living in a shelter, Russell Makofsky, who oversees the P.S. 116 chess program, waived the fees, and a year ago the Adewumi took part in his first tournament with the lowest rating of any participant, 105.

But today his rating is now 1587 and rising fast. (By comparison, the world’s best player, Magnus Carlsen, stands at 2845.) Adewumi went undefeated at the state tournament last weekend, outwitting children from elite private schools with private chess tutors. “I want to be the youngest grandmaster,” he said

What’s even more extraordinary is that Adewumi learned chess only a bit more than a year ago. His play has flabbergasted so many personalities, and he now has seven trophies by his bed in the homeless shelter.

Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting 2003;

The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting 2003 was the eighteenth Meeting of the Heads of Government of the Commonwealth of Nations. It was held in Abuja, Nigeria, between 5 December and 8 December 2003, and hosted by President Olusegun Obasanjo.

The Zimbabwean issue was dominant, leading to one of the highest media profiles for a CHOGM in recent times. The dispute over Zimbabwe's suspension led to a dispute over the re-election of Secretary-General Don McKinnon, and, before the end of the meeting, Robert Mugabe's announcement that Zimbabwe was withdrawing from the Commonwealth. The Aso Rock Declaration reaffirmed the Harare Declaration of 1991 and set the 'promotion of democracy and development' as the organisation's priorities.

The meeting was attended by representatives of fifty-one countries out of the Commonwealth's fifty-four members (suspended members Zimbabwe and Pakistan were not invited, whilst Antigua and Barbuda sent no representative). Thirty-eight were represented by their Head of State or Head of Government.

Prof. Deborah Enilo Ajakaiye; The First Female Professor Of Physics in Nigeria;

Prof. Deborah Enilo Ajakaiye is a brilliant academic who is highly revered for her contribution to the socio-economic development of Nigeria through hydrocarbon discoveries, and incidentally, she is Nigeria’s First Female Professor of Physics.

Prof Ajakaiye was born in 1940 in the city of Jos, the capital of Plateau State.

She attended the University of Ibadan (U.I.) and graduated in 1962 with a bachelor’s degree in physics. She got her master's degree from the University of Birmingham, England, and in 1970, she received her Ph.D. in geophysics from the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU). Originally interested in Mathematics she pursued Geophysics because she had in her a burning desire to contribute positively to the growth and development of her country.

Prof. Ajakaiye became the First Female Professor of Physics in Africa in 1980. She has lectured at Ahmadu Bello University and the University of Jos, serving as the Dean of Natural Sciences at the latter. Her work with ‘Geovisualization’ has been used to locate both mineral deposits and groundwater in Nigeria.

She has also created a map of the topography of Nigeria, working with several of her female students. She has been recognized for both her scientific advancements and her aid to the nation of Nigeria. The Nigerian Mining and GeoSciences Society honored her for her work, making her the first woman to receive the award.

She was also the first black African to be named a fellow of the Geological Society of London.

She has written several books and presented at several lectures. She is a recipient of various awards and a member of various organisations. As a member of the AAPG’s Publications Sub-Committee between 2002 and 2005, she co-authored the book, "Course Manual & Atlas of Structural Styles" on Reflection Profiles from the Niger Delta, with A. W. Bally.
The book has become a reference material on seismic studies and research on the oil-rich Niger Delta region of Nigeria and similar deltas worldwide. She served as a member of the Advisory Council of AAPG from 2001 to 2004, and was elected for AAPG’s Africa Region President
