About three weeks ago I stabbed myself, unintentionally.
@tomcompton_ came for an afternoons squirrel hawking with my Harris's Hawk. Tom worked the dreys with the catapult. Persuading the Squirrells to run from their dreys with some 12mm ball bearings, for the Hawk to chase.
After flicking several dreys we managed to provide the hawk with some good chases. A jaw-dropping vertical chase down a tree with the hawk slamming into the floor saw Zara hanging off the back end off a very angry squirrel.
Understandably, the squirrel had turned around and began to bite the hawk at the base of her tail feathers. I managed to detach the fiesty squirrels jaws from her.
With the squirrel head in my gloved hand I panicked and pushed my knife into the skull of the animal. Aiming for a quick dispatch before my hawk or myself were bitten. I succeeded in dispatching the animal, but the knife went clean through the skull, through my glove and almost through my hand.
I severed two nerves, an arterial vein and possibly damaged some tendons.
Blood was everywhere and my hand stopped functioning.
Fortunately, Tom managed to secure the hawk and carry her back. Then drive me to A.E.
I have had the nerves reconnected in my hand after surgery, however I still have loss of feeling between my index and middle finger.
My hand now functions but has yet to heal. It's currently infected, most likely due to the fact I have squirrel brains somewhere in there (haven't got any super powers yet). @tomcompton_ you're a good mate, and I life saver 🦅🐿️ #huntingofinstagram #hawkingofinstagram #hawksofinstagram #hunting #falconry #falconryofinstagram #accidentshappen - 9 hours ago
