St. Mary’s Episcopal Church Steeple - Abandoned - Athens, GA
Seems like a lot of people know the last remaining piece of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church as the first place the band REM played. But, look a little deeper, and it is so much more.
Construction began on the church in 1869. It all started when Robert Lee Bloomfield, owner of the Athens Manufacturing Company, wanted to provide a church for his employees. St. Mary’s Protestant Episcopal Church held its first service on Easter Sunday, April 9, 1871. When the plant closed, services ended at the church in 1899. But that’s not when the church became abandoned. .
According to some, the church transitioned into many businesses and uses. In 1967, it became student housing. Eventually, it because a hangout for local artists and musicians. When REM played a friends birthday party, the church had been converted into living space and creative business space. .
Time moved on and the church was torn down to make way for condos, but the steeple remains. .
