MARATHON REFLECTIONS #2
- - - -
Just like a pit crew, a knowledgeable running coach is a key member of your support team.
Heather, @gofindyourawesome , who I’m lucky to call my sister-in-love, agreed to take on coaching me through the Austin Distance Challenge and my first marathon.
I decided I needed a Coach because I knew training for a marathon and 5-race series would be very different than training for just one half marathon (thanks Pinterest ).
I learned so much—new types of training runs, running “slower” can actually help you run faster 🤯, nutrition, how to run hills and downhills, how to recover and its importance to the overall plan and so much more.
My training cycle did come with bumps, I won’t lie. I’ve never set goals before, and I’ve always just gone out and “run as hard as I can for as long as I can”.
Heather’s training plans were smart and at the beginning, I did not feel like I was working “hard” enough. She responded to my shenanigans with steady, well thought out advice (I mean, this woman is hardcore! She’s an IRONMAN, and a Dopey Challenge finisher x2. She knows what she’s talking about) and I also started to see the effects.
Even though she is out of state, we communicated through emails, monthly training plans, and messaging: consistent regular check ins with feedback and encouragement, lots of support especially though my illnesses and injuries and she made sure the plan allowed for flexibility—a MUST when you work until the work is done, still wanting to work on strength training and are just plain busy!
Her training earned me a Half PR (2:00:38) and in the top 20 for my age group for the Challenge AND a marathon FINISH!
Heather is certified through the Road Runners Club of America, so not only does she bring her own vast racing experience to the training, but she also has the “book” knowledge too!
Heather, THANK YOU so much for all of your support and guiding me on this crazy journey!! It was such a wild ride and I’m so happy to have shared it with you.
