*KEEP PUSHING THROUGH* Many of us tend to use the month of August as an excuse to wind down, relax, float, procrastinate, and anxiously await the arrival of September when we go "back to the routine". It has been suggested that August is the "Sunday" of Summer. Well if you're comfortable with giving into that mentality then go ahead as long as you are aware of the consequences. See fitness thrives on consistent efforts in order to gain any benefits. When you give up your routine you choose to forfeit the right to gain advantages from exercise. Physiologically, your body will start going in reverse. Loss of muscle and strength from lack of training. Decrease in metabolism. Increase in body fat from too much guilty pleasure calories and not enough output calories. Sleep may become disrupted. The endocrine (hormone) system will struggle to readjust. Fight the urge to say "F*ck it I'll just start back up in the fall" because chances are you may develop lazy habits, get swallowed by the "busy" lifestyle routine and not start training again until way later than you had hoped. By that time all your progress could be diminished back to square one. Keep your workouts consistent this month. Even if its 2x/week make the effort. Plan your workouts ahead of time. Lift heavy, sweat, move, grind the reps, and feel great after doing it. *Medicine Ball Slams* These are great for developing speed and strength in your hip flexors and abdominals, but you have to do them with the right form and mechanics🛠 * * * * Video 1 (Incorrect) demonstrates the arms doing most of the work. There is no flexion at the hips when releasing the ball, and hardly any core muscle engagement. The whole movement itself just looks slow and lazy which wont emphasize those core muscles. Video 2 (Correct) demonstrates a higher "reach" of the arms overhead and creates more length (stretch) of the abdominal muscles by standing up taller before the throw. The more length you create in muscle the greater the distance it has to contract throughout the range of motion. Maria is a long distance runner that was recently diagnosed with a stress fracture in her hip. She was told by her doctor that she can't do any weight bearing exercises for a few weeks including walking. The thought of not working out and losing the strength that she's gained with us was out of the question! We modified our daily workout for Maria by including non weight bearing hip exercises and an upper body routine only.
