We're featuring Joyce, Jesse, Jonah, & Jaxon from @oureveryjlife - who focus on family, travel, and spreading good vibes. They're a Bajan/Korean Canadian family that sold everything to see everything. Welcome to Project #UnsettleDown !
Prior to full-time travel life, Jesse was a social justice lawyer representing children and Joyce a teacher with a focus on helping kids in under-resourced communities. Before leaving, they partnered with @Planeterracares to highlight the nonprofit’s social enterprise projects around the world.
How they fund it? A booming real estate market in Toronto allowed them to sell their home for a 55% increase in value. After selling everything, they were able to 1) pay off the significant student debt 2) put aside a nest egg and 3) have enough left over to do something special: TRAVEL! They aren’t currently employed but their work with Planeterra gives them opportunities to experience sustainable tourism initiatives in beautiful places around the world. In exchange for photography and film services, they get to enjoy cultural and educational experiences, as well as local cuisine, in places like Peru, Vietnam, and Bali. They also collaborate with hotels and recently landed housesitting gigs, free stays in exchange for watching a homeowner's pets.
Their best funding advice is to reassess your budget regularly to stay within your means. They use a website called budgetyourtrip.com to estimate costs in each destination and always add 10-20% on top to allow for contingencies.
Joyce says "We're keen to continue carving out a life that honors the blessings we've received, our biggest blessings being Jonah & Jaxon. We want to live a life where our 70yr-old-future-selves would throw us a righteous shaka. Life's for living, and we hope that while we pursue our passions we can spread positivity and good vibes!”
