So.... 👀 I’m obviously a child of the 80’s... and my Mom was my ultimate hero. This is not a mushy gushy post about how much I adore my Mother and how amazing she is... it’s about the LEOTARD I’m wearing and HOW this leotard help shaped who I’ve become today... 😆
My mom was my hero though... not because she’s an exquisite human being in all ways, yes! but no... BECAUSE of the incredibly difficult CHOICES she had to make along the way. Not just a few... decades. I watched my Mother very deliberately- because I deeply cared and wanted to know who she was - I was invested from a very young age. I saw her as so much more than just my Mom, I believed her to be my highest confidant, my best friend, my mentor. My mom left my Dad to not only save her own life, but to save ours... She was 38 with two little children and a Dance career. Two choices that would ultimately result in empowering me in the future.
One ☝🏼: Choosing to leave my Dad and raise her children in a safe, loving community with the help of her parents - a community that yes supported but also chastised her for being a Divorcée- later in high school I would read the Scarlet Letter and see my Mom through a whole new lense and have even more respect for her choice.
Two: To choose to follow her passion for dance and use her experience as a Ballerina to open a Ballet School... in a pretty conservative community.
These TWO choices pretty much shaped my entire life with my Mother and sooo much of who I would become.
The hand-dyed 1980’s moth eaten Leotard I’ve held onto for 25 years. I found this in my Mom’s dance drawer so many years ago.... and I took it with me on my travels... never wore it just held onto it... a piece of her, a piece of our story... a REMINDER to MAKE BETTER CHOICES and to always follow my truth. ❤️ not always easy to do.
