How does the eugenics movement apply to America today? Unfortunately a woman's choice to have children continues to be threatened on all sides. Until reproductive justice is treated like a human rights issue, so that claims of "inferiority" or "a woman's best interest" are seen for what they are, women will always be vulnerable. .
The eugenics movement was widely celebrated by progressives as a means to help the poor. Even when we think we're doing the right thing, we must persistently recognize implicit biases and advocate for personal agency and choice.
And finally, we must understand the history of words disguised as progress, patriotism, or pride. When we choose words that de-humanize another for the purpose of promoting our supremacy, we are engaging a tradition of hurling hurtful terms at every non-white race throughout our history.
