WHEN THEY SEE US
Based on the Central Park Five Jogger Case that revolved around five young men of colour (four black, one Latino) who were arrested and eventually convicted of attacking and raping a white female jogger in Central Park on the night of April 19, 1989.
In 2002, the five men were exonerated after the real attacker confessed amd his guilt was confirmed by DNA evidence. The newly freed men sued New York City a year after that for racial discrimination and malicious prosecution (among other things,) and were ultimately awarded a settlement of $41 million in 2014.
Their share of that 41 million will never even begin to make up for the 13 years of their lives that they'll never get back. Not to mention it took the city an added 12 years to compensate them. SMH. Being black in America is almost a sentence in itself.
Ava DuVernay co-wrote and directed this upcoming limited Netflix series. All four episodes are lensed by her 'Middle of Nowhere' and 'Selma' collaborator, Oscar-nominated cinematographer, Bradford Young (Arrival, Solo: A Star Wars Story) whilst the cast includes Felicity Huffman as Linda Farstein - the head of the Manhattan District Attorney's office who oversaw the prosecution. Jharrel Jerome of 'Moonlight,' Caleel Harris, Ethan Herisse, Asante Blackk and Marquis Rodriguez star as the Central Park Five of Korey Wise, Anton McCray, Yusef Salaam, Kevin Richardson and Raymond Santana respectively.
Surrounding ensemble also comprises Vera Farmiga, Michael K. Williams (The Wire, Boardwalk Empire,) John Leguizamo (John Wick,) Chris Chalk (Gotham,) Storm Reid (A Wrinkle in Time) and two actors of Nigerian descent I would be remiss not to mention, Adepero Oduye (Pariah,) Jovan Adepo - Overlord, Fences.
One of the events the series touches on is Donald Trump's stunt of taking out full-page ads in all four of New York City's big newspapers insisting on the return of the death sentence with an argument that the Central Park Five be executed.
