On March 30, 1819, President James Monroe and his entourage departed Washington D.C. by steamboat and began to travel "with the sun towards the south," landing in Norfolk on March 31. Monroe then traveled overland, making a stop in Elizabeth City, and eventually arrived in Edenton on April 4, 1819.
