I’ve already posted a review today, but I started listening to this album for the umpteenth time and decided I just wanted to write about it, so enjoy!
The Glow, Pt. 2 by The Microphones is the 2001 lo-fi indie masterwork from Phil Elverum, and while his work has had uncountable highlights from his Microphones material to his work as Mount Eerie, for me this is the pinnacle of his catalogue. Few albums have such a sense of atmosphere, such careful attention to detail, and such emotional impact, and few albums flow from one track to the next so masterfully as The Glow, Pt. 2, and this is clear from the very start. I Want Wind To Blow is beautiful, with varied instrumentation that slowly and satisfyingly builds over the track, setting the mood quickly and transitioning beautifully into the title track, which is loud and provocative (the organ section when he sings “My blood flows harshly” always makes the hair on my neck stand up). The Moon features some incredibly drumming, keys, and horns, a stellar track, and introduces the lone note that becomes a recurring character in the album, seemingly always present. I find My Roots Are String And Deep swirling, warm, and beautiful, and the instrumental that follows is also gorgeous and moody. The two tracks called (Something) act as an interlude, two instrumentals that are honestly a little scary. Map is a powerful, impactful moment on the album, thanks in large part from its elements of noise rock it uses (you could call it noise folk). Despite some raw, harsh vocals, You’ll Be In The Air is one of the more intimate and gorgeous tracks on the album, one that makes my heart swell. I Felt My Size is a surprising, evolving, and moving track, perhaps my favorite on the album, and its energy compliments the calm intimacy of its sister track, I Felt Your Shape, absolutely perfectly. After the noisy kick in the teeth that is Samurai Sword is My Warm Blood, which starts wild, calms down, and devolves into the lone note with occasional heartbeats and faint, haunting sounds of previous tracks. The Glow Pt. 2 is perfect, an essential for all indie music fans.
