When looking at disc bulges it is important to consider why pain actually occurs. In the vast majority of cases, there is a posterior or backwards element to the disc bulge, and the pressure this places on the surrounding structure causes pain. 😨😨😨
It is for this reason that extension is recommended, as when extend through our lumbar spine, there is an anterior or forward pressure on the disc. This helps to encourage the disc bulge to return to its normal location, and also takes the pressure off of these surrounding structures. 🙌🙌🙌
The McKensie extension is a great exercise to gently encourage this extension and can be completely controlled by the amount of movement in the arms. Whether you have a suspected disc bulge or even just a stiff or tight back, definitely give this exercise a go!
