𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿: 𝗪𝗲𝘀 𝗔𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻
Another meek, stale, overrated Wes Anderson affair. The same critiques that I had for ‘The Royal Tenenbaums’ also apply here; stilted dialogue, unrealistic and deceptively shallow plot and characters, and infinitely more twee style than any substance. Though it is a bit better- that twee style is much grander here, and it’s visually quite beautiful. Anderson makes cool looking sets, that’s for sure. The plot is quite ridiculous and hard to follow, but it doesn’t seem to take itself too seriously which is appreciated. And the huge array of quirky characters add some element of interest, even though they are more ideas as opposed to actual fleshed-out characters. Those are really just feint compliments though, because I still found ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’ boring and self-satisfying for the most part. The plot within a plot within a plot serves no purpose, other than I guess allowing Anderson to fill the cast with more of his favourite actors to read his flat dialogue in that same old idiosyncratic way. I think Wes Anderson should write picture books, he’d be really good at that.
