Sentimental & complex story time, but hey, that’s just me lately ... My @influxaz public art sculpture, Transversing Sonoran Connections, was finalized early January and thus began adventures in laborious fabrication and installation. Two concrete + copper obelisks with aviation maps etched in copper register airspace above while circuitry runs down the copper internal sides. The circuit board pattern is of a circuit used in radio frequency applications. Here those patterns are filled with satellite view of human impact on Phoenix landscape that will patina and fade in the copper over time. My time as a researcher within the environmental industry left me with an enormous curiosity for investigating our civilization’s pattens and impacts on the planet. Obelisks that navigate skies and echo human-made patterns deep within... Conduits. That said, my art is also always tethered to the profoundly personal. This sculpture was a quiet way for me to honor the 40th year of my father’s death (Feb 22) in a naval aviation mission. I’ve always searched skyward for connections to him as I seek to further understand myself & navigate the world around me. And unexpectedly this February the world also unfortunately lost a concrete pioneer and mentor, Jim Ralston. One was a father I never knew, the other treated me like a daughter and years back Jim introduced me to various custom concrete connections, mixes and molds to push material boundaries for art’s sake. He always gifted friends with found objects or random tokens. As a small tribute, I cast an item he gifted me into the surface of this concrete sculpture. In an odd twist, on April 27th, I’ll attend Jim’s memorial in the morning and then be standing next to my sculpture at 2PM for the Influx Art Tour. During that time I welcome you to come visit with me, learn more about this sculpture, the story and all the work that went into creating this . .
