I’m going to confess, I have no idea where this is—it may be San Diego—but it’s a beautiful photograph exploring what we call June Gloom out here in Southern California. It hasn’t gotten quite this ominous but we are so spoiled by sunshine every day, this kind of hazy shade of summer has us (me) waiting for it to burn away so beach time can actually begin.
We’re going to try and stay positive but first: I love Jim Jarmusch films. Seen each one multiple times and appreciated his understanding of life’s small mysteries and details. That makes his new god awful “The Dead Don’t Die” so depressing. It’s such an unfunny and inert self referential socio-political allegory and satire, you wish Jarmusch just yelled at his wall for a half hour instead of making this obvious film about politics and materialistic people (spoiler alert: they are bad and live like zombies). It’s just dreadfully dull and smugly self knowing. Let’s hope he goes back to the small human comedies he’s so good at.
Taylor Swift’s new “You Need to Calm Down” is another stinker. A mix of haters be bad diatribe and quasi female empowerment song (you don’t tell women to be hysterical or stay in their place—good idea badly executed), it’s just lame pop music. She needs to get over her critics and feuds and concentrate on making good songs that will have a positive, empowering message (not that’s that’s necessary in every song) that will resonate and be actually listenable. This isn’t.
I watched the first episode of HBO’s new teen drama about mental illness, “Euphoria” and was alarmed by its superficiality and cliches. The show bordered on mental illness chic— beautiful young people in crisis. Teens of every generation have been in pain. This generation faces different challenges but all generations faced their own unique problems. This glossed over the real psychology for cheap answers and lame narration. It needs to improve quickly so it doesn’t exploit a very sensitive subject. On to sunnier things.
