When I booked a hiking tour of the Great Wall of China, I'm not quite sure what I was expecting - I suppose I was more focused on the wall itself than what the surrounding areas would look like.
This photo was from the first moment I stepped onto the wall after hiking up the mountain from the village in the far right of the photo . I was so... Well, gobsmacked I guess, that I was seeing scenery like this with my own eyes. I hadn't expected the mountains to be so rough, so jagged, and yet so beautiful. I'd seen mountains before, but none like this - it was a completely different side of nature. And how on earth the wall was ever built on top of a mountain range like that is beyond me... But it all adds to the wonder and the magic.
Luckily the hike started in a remote village, far away from any tourist areas, so our little group had the wall all to ourselves, which in itself was rather magical. -
And to have wonderful weather (although it was about minus 5 degrees ️) and clear blue skies was just the cherry on top of the cake. What a day this turned out to be. - 0 seconds
