I had such a great time at the Candlemas Ball this year! A night of elegance, fun, and beauty! All around us there was royal art in the grand ballroom at the Michigan Shores Club, it felt like we were in a European castle! Here is the princess of the evening, my wonderful best friend Andrea and my dance partner. What an amazing night alongside other incredible classy Catholics from all around Chicago. Hosted by our #StJohnCantius young adults group, Quo Vadis @sjcantius A A big round of applause to the awesome Steve Anthony live band and everyone who danced the night away! We are so grateful for those who worked so hard to make this happen, and the Theology of Dance crew who taught us ballroom dancing, waltz, foxtrot, and other classical moves. May God reward them and the Canons who had a surprise appearance with Father Robin SJC to bless us and our endevour to renew Catholic culture. St. Cyril was a priest and a philosopher and accompanied his brother St. Methodius to Moravia to preach the Gospel. They both perfected a Slavonic alphabet which is now known as the Cyrillic alphabet and translated the liturgy into this language. They were summoned to Rome, where Cyril died on this date in 869, and Methodius was consecrated bishop and sent to Pannonia. He died on April 6, 885, in Velehrad, Czech Republic, after working tirelessly on spreading the Gospel. According to the 1962 Missal of Bl. John XXIII the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite, their feast is celebrated on July 7. According to the Nuremberg Chronicle, he risked the wrath of the Emperor by standing up for traditional marriage and secretly marrying soldiers to their brides, even though Claudius II had banned traditional marriage in the military. But Valentine got into trouble again with the state for converting people to Christianity and to the love of Jesus Christ. He even attempted to convert Claudius to Christianity. This attempt enraged Claudius. Saint Valentine was arrested, dragged before the Prefect of Rome, and condemned to die. Right before his execution on February 14, as a last act of communication with the outside world, Saint Valentine wrote a note to the judge’s daughter whom he had healed, and signed it, “from your Valentine.” . In the High Middle Ages, Geoffrey Chaucer, the father of English literature, wrote Parliament of Foules (c.1393). The ultimate Valentine. Jesus. But in all seriousness, Happy St Valentines Day! Despite my aversion to overly secularized holidays, I’ve come to like St Valentines over the years. The actual Saint was from the 200s. The legend goes that the Roman Emperor has banned marriages on the idea that men would be more willing to go to war for him if they didn’t have wives and children to worry about. Saint Valentine, a Bishop of Rome, was venimenytly opposed to this and performed countless marriages in secret. When he was found out he was arrested, and while he awaited the verdict, he healed his jailer’s daughter’s sight, signing a note to her “from your Valentine”. The whole family of the jailer converted to Christianity and Saint Valentine was immediately sentenced to death by beheading for continuing to convert people to Christianity and for not sacrificing to pagan gods. He’s a worthy saint for this feast day of love, promoting the importance of sacramental marriage even unto death. It always makes me roll my eyes a little at both extremes of the Valentines - those who only want to talk about relationships and those who only want to talk about how Saint Valentine got his head chopped off. Like pretty much all the Saints, Saint Valentine is so much more than his patronage. One aspect of a Saint’s life never can fully describe who they really were. The first layer of the Gemma painting is done! I don’t know how I feel about that green grass, but I’m going to add a whole lot of lilies around the saint. It always intrigues me how a painting looks after the first layer. Usually I get really nervous because the colors are off and I have to cling to the image in my head or else I’ll just think it’s not repairable. Here’s to a new start!
