On July 1st 1927, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk got on the train from Ankara and got off in Izmit. There, he got on board Yacht Ertugrul. Yacht Ertugrul travelled across the gulf and reached the sea of Marmara.
Ataturk's destination was Istanbul, where he was very much missed!
People of Istanbul had gathered on ships, shallops and boats of any kind and were waiting for him on sea on the entrance of the Bosphorus.
On May 16th 1919 Mustafa Kemal Ataturk had left Istanbul and eight years later, he was returning to Istanbul the city he restored to liberty, again by sea.
Everyone was on the sea welcoming Atuturk. Smoke of ferries, whistles and blows, people waving flags, applause... On the deck of Yacht Ertugrul, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk looked at the people welcoming him and ask this: - Where's Bandirma? Where's Bandirma?
Among dozens of ships, his eyes were looking for Bandirma. He asked for the ship he set sail on eight years ago, his fellow traveler from the dark days. Yes, he asked for Bandirma. "Where's Bandirma?". And it's 2019... The year 2019 is the 100th Anniversary of Bandirma setting off.
If the first step towards the Moon is a big step for humanity, the first step taken by our ancestor to Samsun is such a big step for us.
Because it is the first step of freedom march.
Those who believe in independece, today is the "Commemoration of Ataturk and the Festival of Youth and Sports", let's celebrate!... #19mayısatatürküanmagençlikvesporbayramı #commemorationofataturkyouthandsportsday
