Lisette Model was a prominent street photographer in the 1940s. She focused on finding uniqueness in the mundane & captured raw, funny, truthful images of what life was like around her. This week I carried my Holga around with the goal to capture portraits that were unposed and authentic to my daily life. I didn’t overthink it or allow myself to stage “the perfect photo” instead I chose to capture moments and people that are absolutely and fully regular. The titles of the photographs are fitting to each photo, and they are also all the same, a quote from Model: “Photography is the easiest art, which perhaps makes it the hardest.” In a world of smartphones and Instagram it is safe to say that taking a photograph, at its core, is simple. With the overflow of images in our world it is important to ask what makes yours stand out. These photos are arranged to be an ode to a traditional contact sheet while simultaneously reflecting the design of an Instagram profile grid. Perhaps if Lisette Model had an Instagram it would look a little something like this.
