Anyone who follows climbing will most likely be aware of the recent tragedy on Howse Peak with the sad loss of @jessroskelley, @davidlama_official & @hansjoergauer.
Jess was a member of DMM's Climbing Team, often attending clinics & climbing festivals for us in the USA. Ben Bransby, DMM team manager, shares recollections of Jess from those times:
—
"I first met Jess in Alabama where I was attending Horseshoe Hell for DMM & Jess was along as a sponsored athlete. I arrived jet-lagged, tired and struggling to cope with the humidity and was slightly dreading meeting the hardcore alpine climber who might be expecting VIP treatment. Jess arrived into the airport terminal with trucker cap, tattoos, and a certain swagger but with a grin from ear to ear which hinted at the easy-going joker beneath."
•
"We spent a week together that first trip, assembling the stand, camping in the wood, manning the stand, climbing in the 24hr marathon event (sneaking off for burgers and milkshakes in town at one point) and partying afterward. We came from different sides of the climbing game – him more at home amongst the snow and high mountains - but Jess chatted about folk we knew in common & those we didn’t with great enthusiasm and passion. Our climbing overlapped the most in Patagonia."
•
"He had a real passion for climbing, especially in more remote places, as well as the history of the sport but he was in no way single-minded. We both had dogs & we'd spend hours sharing pictures of his English Bulldog and my fluffy ones. He had an almost child-like curiosity about the medieval history of the UK, asking me how close I lived to a castle, if I had ever been inside one and about kings, queens and knights. I felt slightly guilty for knowing significantly less than him..."
•
"Jess spent a lot of time talking about his family & plans for the future. He still lived close to his parents and sister and was obviously close to them but mostly he would talk about his wife Allison. He could hardly believe his good fortune that he was with someone so smart, funny and beautiful.”
—
Our thoughts are with the families & friends of Jess Roskelley, David Lama and Hansjörg Auer at this sad time. RIP.

@emmatwyford pulling hard during her successful ascent of The Big Issue (E9 6c) at Pembroke this August. @epictvclimbing filmed an interview with Emma the next day, talking about the journey that climbing has taken her on since starting out & deciding to leave the comp scene behind to concentrate on her love of getting out on the crag. Sixteen year-old @emily_climbing hitting her powerband in the final of the ‘Battle of Britain 2018’ senior women’s competition @depotmanchester.
After just making it through qualification she got back to her usual impressive form to finish 2nd behind the World Youth Bouldering Champion @hannahslaney.
The comp had an attractive prize fund with £2000 for each 1st placed senior.

The remarkable Millipede Boulder at Horse Pen 40’s in Alabama. Ben Bransby on the area’s best known squeeze problem, Millipede (V5). The guidebook could well be right when it says, “...you’ll never find a feature that looks like this one anywhere.” It’s definitely one you won’t forget in a hurry. Contender for the one of the top fifty problems in the States?

Tomorrow at the opening of the @outdoorshow in Friedrichshafen we'll be launching our latest new products and range updates.

If you've been following along closely you'll have guessed that among the new additions will be micro cams. There will be six colour coded Dragonfly Cams covering placements from 7.4 - 28.3mm. The size 1 Dragonfly (green) is particularly notable as it will be the smallest certified climbing cam on the market.

In spring 2019, our new extremely compact and lightweight HMS biner will also be available. The Phantom HMS is ideally suited to belaying and rigging. Use of an extra-short gate maintains the proportions and means it can take two clove hitches with ease. It's a great belay biner for trad and multi-pitch sport climbing.

Paired with another new product, the Captiv8, the Phantom HMS is the world’s lightest directional belay carabiner. The unobtrusive 'strap and clip' of the Captiv8 promotes correct carabiner orientation and is compatible across our range of aluminium screwgate biners.

We'll also be showing our new unisex fixed leg Trance harness and updated wire gate quickdraw range in vibrant colourways. The Alpha Hybrid and Shadow/Spectre Hybrid quickdraws, having a straight gate on the top of the draw and a wire gate on the rope clipping end, are new additions.

In time for the northern hemisphere winter, climbers will welcome the ease of being able to place DMM’s new Wired Torque Nuts above their head.

There's too much information to fit into one post here, so there’s a link in our bio for further info including download links to product information sheets and our 2019 workbook.

@emmatwyford engrossed in the sustained intricacies of Once Upon a Time in the South West (E9 6c), Dyer’s Lookout, Devon.

Emma described the bold fifty-metre slab route as: “Really sustained which makes it so tiring. At any point you stop concentrating you could fluff it. There are bits of good gear but it’s mostly small so I’d rather not have tested it. Here I’m just setting up for the technical crux.”

@emmatwyford seems pretty pleased in this clip of her successful redpoint earlier this year. The expletive is understandable. 🎥 @alexhaslehurst

There’s something extra special about winter climbing in north Wales because you never know if routes will come into condition or how long they’ll last.
Time is of the essence; climbers become possessed with winter fever. This time it lasted just a couple of days. From Saturday, here’s Nick Bullock on the first pitch of an old Mick Fowler route, Colonial Virgin, on Cader Idris.
The line follows the ramp to the hanging icicle at the top right of the photo at a grade around Vl 7. The following day the rising mercury meant Nick was heading to the climbing gym. 📷 @ray_wood .

James McHaffie pebble squeezing on the tricky and precarious upper arête of Flight of Ideas (E6 7a) at Stanage. While cold conditions are a godsend for friction on the gritstone, the frigid northerly wind that was gusting along the edge demanded a steely approach.

Dan McManus in a fine position a couple of pitches below the top of El Cap on The Shaft (5.13c).
“Classic Yosemite laybacking, almost a slab but very thin and very slippy,” is how Dan describes it.
“The Shaft in five days felt brutally hard & we had very little downtime. Instead we were starting & finishing in the dark every day & we topped out in freezing damp conditions as the bad weather arrived. This pitch - 31 out of 33 - was wet when we got there on our last day so @madeleine_cope led her first pitch of aid to get us past it. We returned a few days later, once the weather had improved, and abseiled in to free this brilliant pitch.”

Our newest team member 16-year-old @matthew_paraclimbing in-flight but not quite high enough to latch the top of Smash (7B), La Roche aux Sabots, Fontainebleau.

Matthew is a GB Paraclimber; recently winning the second round of the IFSC World Paraclimbing Cup in Sheffield. Born with his right arm missing below the elbow he only seriously started climbing in 2014. 📸 Thanks to @simonrawlinson for the cool pic.
