Beads were one of the first trade goods that Europeans began to trade with Native Americans. Prior to using beads we used porcupine quills, shells and animal teeth. We would use different plants and berries to dye the quills and shells. The artistry of “beading/quill working” is a thousands of years old tradition amongst Native American tribes. Different tribes have distinct designs that are particular to their tribe and inspired by a tribes environment. Tribes then bands then clans have distinct bead work and color schemes sort of like family crests. Bead work and quill work items are also passed on from generation to generation. The artistry of beadwork is medicine and wearing your traditional bead work is also medicine. There are are currently still thousands of Native American artists carrying on this tradition. .
