If it’s going to snow in March, I want to watch it fall while I’m inside a room that’s hotter than my body temperature. Thanks Shelley @breathecambridge for another perfect Sunday morning. 🔥 #infernohotpilates #breathecambridge

A year ago today, I closed on this brown behemoth and celebrated with champagne and KFC in the basement with friends. In one year, this house has absorbed the vast majority of my savings account, a not insignificant portion of my time, more brain space than I thought I had room for, and a liberal dose of my actual blood, sweat, and tears. In return, I’ve gained the best neighbors a girl could ask for, a sense of confidence I didn’t know I lacked, a sharp awareness of privilege and ability and ethics, and 25 extra stress pounds. I’m grateful for every last thing, and even more grateful for the unbelievable amount of support I’ve received from family, friends, and complete strangers. Here’s to year two: may it be dramatically less expensive and even more fun. #house #boston #dorchester #home #wojtouthome

In a magical confluence of the right place at the right time with the most wonderfully generous department head, @csmentek and I got to go to the top floor of the Green Building, to a tiny, secret elevator that requires a key, up to the roof of the tallest building in Cambridge. The lesson here: always ask for what you want. The answer just might be yes!

A downside to not posting is that you take fewer photos, so this is the only evidence I have of of the incredible time I spent with @corneliusdriscoll and @mvilardi, two of my favorite people. Even though they made me climb up the sixth highest hill in San Francisco after half a bottle of wine! ❤️

I took a break from Instagram. I might take another one, so text me if you want to reach me! It was interesting to see how my brain worked when I went for walks, wandered through museums, worked late night events, took planes, trains, and automobiles— all without posting about it. I liked it. But for now, here’s a glimpse of a few free hours between events last week. #sanfrancisco

There will never be a more convenient season for justice, equality, and freedom. There is only now. To my white loved ones: if you haven’t recently read “Letter From A Birmingham Jail,” I’d recommend celebrating this holiday by doing that, supporting Black-owned businesses, and donating to an anti-racist organization. I picked the Trauma Center at Justice Resource Institute, which provides support to youth affected by homicides here in Boston. Active anti-racist thought and action is the only way forward. To my Black loved ones: I see you. Here’s to a more just and equitable tomorrow.

i am running into a new year
and the old years blow back
like a wind
that i catch in my hair
like strong fingers like
all my old promises
it will be hard to let go
of what i said to myself
about myself
when i was sixteen
and twenty-six and thirty-six
even thirty-six but
i am running into a new year
and i beg what i love and
i leave to forgive me

There were two toddlers involved, so of course the photos are blurry! Thanks @taraconforto for the 🍕, the 🧺, and the company. Is there anything cuter than a baby in a sleep sack? (It’s a hypothetical question. There is nothing cuter.) #babygrace #babyaudrey

My word of the year for 2018 was *Home* and according to my #topnine2018, I think I nailed it.

This is my third solo Christmas Eve. Year one was just pure, exquisite grief (for several reasons.) Year two was a process of moving through loneliness to get to aloneness. This year has been a mix. There were moments this season when grief felt sharp and fresh, but I was able to greet it, and, if not quite welcome it, at least be kind to it. In some ways, we’re all walking through the end of each year with gaping holes in our hearts, and I’m grateful that my chosen family consists of people who can hold joy and sorrow together, who can laugh through the tears. Some of them even give me ridiculous(ly perfect) cat sweaters in the midst of it all. Anyway, merry Christmas, from my little family to yours, and may each day be a little brighter than the last. ❤️🎄😘

One of the lucky things about my house is that it is on a street that falls just inside the border of the best neighborhood organization in #boston. Tonight was the @wowcoaliton monthly meeting, with bonus potluck and yankee swap, which means I ate better than I have in weeks AND came home with some matching kitchen soap and hand lotion. I’m so happy to be part of this community. #dorchester #westofwashington

I come from a long line of women who will spend a Sunday rearranging all of the furniture in their house. Two years ago this week, I was flying back to Boston after saying goodbye to one of them. A year ago this week, I was putting an offer on a house I hadn’t even seen, and today I’m thinking again about how much Babcha would have loved this house— not the house itself, but the fact that I bought it. She was the one with the eye for real estate, and never hesitated to tell me about the houses she’d beg my grandfather to buy, because she knew they’d be an investment. (In these stories, he’d always said no 😂) Babcha’s unsentimental, matter-of-fact advice to buy instead of rent a decade ago is the only reason I’m able to be on this terrifying journey of multi-family homeownership. She’s here in this house— her spirit, her art, her furniture— but it’s never going to feel like enough. I miss her. This Sunday rearranging is for Babcha. #wojtouthome (Blue rug and coffee table both from @chamonixantiques!)

About a year and a half ago, when I was trying to decide where in Boston to move, @austin_ashe took me out for a night in East Boston. After *redacted* drinks, I told him how awesome Eastie was, and he spread his long arms wide and sang, “This could be your life!” I don’t live there, but I’m lucky that Austin does, and he and @helley_belley make a serious birthday brunch spread. Here’s to 38, friend! #sundayfunday #birthday

In one of the temple gardens in Kyoto, I started chatting with a woman from Australia about our time there, and I asked her if she were also traveling alone. “Yeah, of course,” she said immediately. “So much more freedom that way.” Which is exactly how I felt.
Traveling alone means walking as long and as far as you want, even if your feet hurt. It means stopping for food if you’re hungry, or staying hungry longer if you’re not ready to stop yet. It means turning a corner just because it looks interesting, and following that new route for hours if you feel like it. It means being much better able to respectfully blend into the background in a culture that isn’t yours, even if you’re tall and blonde in Japan, simply because you can be quiet. It means that if you’re not sure about how to order something from a street vendor, you can linger for a while and watch other people order first. It means getting up before sunrise to walk 18 miles and only being responsible for yourself. It means never asking someone, “what do you want to do?” Yes, it can be lonely. But there’s freedom in that, too.
