Putting together 2 of my interests, music and action figures, from Atlantic Canada 🇨🇦

Into The Wild is the debut studio album by Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder, released in September 2007, and is the soundtrack to the film of the same name. The film's director, Sean Penn, went directly to Vedder to have him compose musical narrative for some of the film's sequences, and Vedder recalled feeling full yet unspoken trust to get the job done. Vedder likened the recording process to being in factory, but not in the negative sense, where he would receive clips from the movie needing a soundtrack, and he'd start on a rough mix with a fretless bass or mandolin, then write the accompanying vocals. It felt very focused to Vedder, because context for the lyrics were to accompany a specific clip he was working with. It was so focused though, Vedder felt like he was in a daze during recording, then coming out of it barely remembering anything. Reviews came in fairly positive, mentioning how Vedder's work was a great compliment to the scenes they were tied to. Deadpool just got thrown into the wild streets of Manhattan, where the classic Spidey villain Rhino just made a mess of Broadway (yes, that's the piece of road that came with the ToyBiz figure from way back). Deadpool is a fan of getting messy though, and not just in his pants either, so he's got this. This goes out to @mobbevinyl who has this album cover as his Instagram profile pic. Now's a perfect time to jump on his bandwagon, because he's having you interact with a bunch of other people to determine music's best contributions on a variety of subjects! #eddievedder #intothewild #folkrock #jrecords #deadpool #broadway #toybiz

As Nasty As They Wanna Be is the third album by 2 Live Crew, released in February 1989. This would be their best selling album, and it's probably because of the continuous and countless lawsuits it spurred after its release. For the sake of brevity let's focus on Jack Thompson, a lawyer for the American Family Assocation that met with then-Florida Governor Bob Martinez about the possibility of legally classifying the album as obscene. Of course, this would earn Martinez a very prominent shout-out on the band's next album. In June 1990, a US District court ruled the album obscene and illegal to sell, making it the first album in history to be classified as such, and some record store owners were arrested for selling the album, while 3 members of the band were arrested for performing songs from the album at a club in Hollywood, Florida. A little Canadian fun fact about this album, even Marc Emery, who most of us know today as a marijuana activist, was arrested in Ontario for having sold the album also. The obscenity classification was eventually overturned in 1992 by the US Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit, but all of this just drew more attention to the album, which sold over two million copies, peaking at number 29 on the Billboard 200 and number 3 on the Top R&B/Hip Hop albums. Tonight we've got Black Panther, Lando Calrissian, Deadpool (who still hasn't given Namor his body back) and Star-Lord doing their PG-13 best to entertain the girls because nay sayer @dj_cooper_vinyl_habit thought it wasn't possible. I just made you a believer, admit it! #2livecrew #asnastyastheywannabe #atlanticrecords #miamibass #dirtyrap #hiphop #marvel #dccomics #pg13

Boots is the debut studio album by Nancy Sinatra, released in 1966. The eldest daughter of Ol' Blue Eyes, Frank Sinatra, had released a few singles after being signed to his label Reprise Records in 1961, but hadn't done so well and faced being dropped. In came Lee Hazelwood, a songwriter, producer and arranger who would "reboot" Sinatra in a sense, by crafting songs that would have her sing in a lower key. Once that was established, her looks were also given a reboot (or wait, is that boots? anyways) with bleached-blonde hair, frosted lips and heavy eye make-up. This new Nancy was ready to give us her new single, "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'", which was inspired by a line in 1963 movie "4 for Texas", starring her father and Dean Martin, showing off her boots and Carnaby Streets fashion that became synonymous with the "Swinging Sixties". This reinvigorated, if not launched, Sinatra's musical career with that single alone earning three Grammy nominations in the process. I tried to find a decent segue by looking up "Harley Quinn boots", and just got a bunch of links to buy her Suicide Squad-style boots on etsy and Amazon, so yeah that's probably going to be showing up in my Facebook feed for the next few weeks now. #nancysinatra #boots #thesebootsaremadeforwalkin #popmusic #60smusic #dccomics #suicidesquad #harleyquinn #leehazelwood

The Velvet Underground & Nico is the debut album by The Velvet Underground, released in March 1967. The album was recorded while the band was featured on Andy Warhol's Exploding Plastic Inevitable tour, which had become known for pushing the boundaries of performance and overt mention of drug abuse, prostitution, sadomasochism and sexual deviancy. Andy Warhol and Columbia Records sales exec Norman Dolph financed the recording session held at the dilapidated Scepter Studios in Manhattan, then Dolph tried to get Columbia to distribute the album, but they declined due to the controversy surrounding the lyrical themes, as did Atlantic Records and Elektra Records. Finally, MGM-owned Verve Records agreed to distribute the record, but unfortunately it was a failure both financially and in number of sales. From Andy Warhol's banana sticker album cover that you could peel off, leading to manufacturing complications and delays in release, to Verve dropping the ball in promoting it. It wasn't until about 10 years later that the album started to get some serious recognition from the music world, with musician Brian Eno stating the initial release may have only had about 30,000 copies sold, but he's confident every one of those 30,000 people started bands just from the inspiration the album delivered. The recognition didn't stop there either, with Rolling Stone magazine placing it 13th on its 500 Greatest Albums of All Time and the Library of Congress adding it to its National Recording Registry in 2006. There's a track on the album called "I'll Be Your Mirror", and looks like we've got the 1980s toy version of Bumblebee acting like a mirror to this black and yellow banana. I might have been a couple of days late taking this picture. Sorry, banana. #thevelvetunderground #thevelvetundergroundandnico #ververecords #artrock #psychedelicrock #protopunk #transformers #bumblebee #banana

This is the soundtrack to the 1990 romantic comedy Pretty Woman, released in March 1990. Stacked with some hit singles, such as Roxette's "It Must Have Been Love", Roy Orbison's classic "Oh, Pretty Woman" and Go West's "King of Wishful Thinking", this soundtrack didn't have a problem selling, going multi-platinum in the US, Canada, the UK and a few other countries. The movie shows us classic romantic lead Richard Gere hiring the headstrong Julia Roberts to accompany him for social and business functions while in LA. Of course, the movie progresses with Roberts opening Gere's eyes, and heart, to make him question his life as a "corporate raider" that buys companies, dismantles them, just to sell them in pieces to prospective buyers. Now, of course Wonder Woman is also pretty, but the reason for having chosen Superman and Wonder Woman is because of (spoiler alert) what Gere and Roberts said to each other in the end of the movie. After Gere jumps out of his white limo, says: "So what happens after he climbed up the tower and rescues her?", to which she responds "She rescues him back." And we all know, that sums up Supes and WW. #prettywoman #moviesoundtrack #popmusic #classicrock #roxette #royorbison #gowest #dccomics #superman #wonderwoman

"Up" is the debut studio album for Right Said Fred, released in March 1992. Brothers Fred and Richard Fairbrass may seemed to have come out of nowhere, but they had been in the music industry since about the late 1970s. Richard was employed as a session bassist for acts such as Boy George, Mick Jagger and David Bowie, while Fred made an appearance in Bob Dylan's film "Hearts of Fire". Fast forward to 1989, and the brothers decided to form "Right Said Fred", a tribute to the hit song by singer and actor Bernard Cribbins. Then in July 1991, "I'm Too Sexy" was their debut single and gave them international recognition, peaking at number one on many charts, including the US Billboard Hot 100. They continued their success with two more singles prior to the release of the album, which were "Don't Talk Just Kiss" in October 1991, then "Deeply Dippy" in February 1992. Once the album was released, it also charted high in many countries. Tonight, I guess Deadpool is too sexy for his own body, swapping heads with Namor, asking that I call him Right Said Dead. Whatever, as long as I don't have to be exposed to how he's going to indulge in his new body, be it the overuse of hip thrusts or awkward bending at the waist. #rightsaidfred #debutalbum #dancepop #imtoosexy #marvel #deadpool #rightsaiddead

This is the self-titled debut album by the New York Dolls, released in July 1973. When they originally formed in 1971, they had started playing together as something on the side, since they mostly had non-musical career pursuits and were just a bunch of young club-going guys that were trying to figure out a way to "get us some chicks", in their words. With their cross-dressing and heavy use of vulgarity, they had built a cult following that kept most record labels away, but Mercury Records stepped up where others wouldn't. Producer Todd Rundgren was brought in to try and round up these undisciplined youths because the belief was that the only person suited for recording a band from New York and making them worth listening to is a producer also from New York. The recording went as expected, with Rundgren trying his best to keep the band interested in the process, especially in the mixing stages where Rundgren could tell they just wanted to get the album out already. Even though upon release, the album didn't do that well commercially, it eventually became known as an influential precursor to 1970s punk rock and also one of the best debut albums in the rock genre. Now, I know sometimes people refer to action figures as "dolls", so I've got my own New York Dolls here with us tonight with the Human Torch, Spider-Man, Misty Knight, the Punisher and Daredevil, who are all known for doing most of their crime fighting right on their own home turf. #newyorkdolls #debutalbum #punkrock #protopunk #glamrock #marvel #mistyknight #humantorch #spiderman #punisher #daredevil
Thanks @natdivinyl for suggesting this one..! pretty awesome backstory!

Use Your Illusion II is the fourth studio album by Guns N' Roses, released in conjunction with Use Your Illusion I in September 1991. Production-level similarities exist between the albums, such as having one track that features a band member other than Axl Rose acting as lead vocal, and one cover song, being Paul McCartney and Wings' Live and Let Die on Use Your Illusion I, and Bob Dylan's Knockin' on Heaven's Door on Use Your Illusion II. However, of the two albums, this one has more of a political and statement-driven vibe to it with songs like "Civil War", "Get in the Ring" and "Knockin' on Heaven's Door". When the band was in the mixing stages for both albums, they noticed their engineer/producer Bob Clearmountain had the intention to entirely replace all of the drum tracks recorded by Matt Sorum with samples and so he was immediately fired. This meant they had to start the mixing process from scratch, but pulled it off with the help of Sex Pistols engineer Bill Price. Use Your Illusion II performed slightly better than it's sibling, selling more copies in its first week and all-time, as well as performing better on most album charts by just a few positions. The experience of the Use Your Illusion albums is still one worth having, and considered a monumental achievement for the band in its career. Tonight, we've got Archangel at a nearby Starbucks writing about the Civil War the X-Men faced after the House of M saga that wiped out all of but 198 mutants. Of course, he's going to do this on a laptop because let's face it, we've come a long way from the album cover's representation of the painting titled "The School of Athens" and Raphael's use of a quill. #gunsnroses #useyourillusion #useyourillusionii #geffenrecords #civilwar #hardrock #heavymetal #marvel #archangel #theschoolofathens

The Stranger is the fifth studio album by Billy Joel, released in September 1977. After his previous album "Turnstiles" had not sold nor charted as well as his label, Columbia Records, had hoped, this was a do-or-die situation for Joel to remain signed with them. He sought out a couple of producers, including veteran Beatles producer George Martin, but none would let him go with the idea of using his newly-formed touring band to record the next album. Enter Phil Ramone, who understood the reason for Joel's insistence not substituting his current bandmates for session musicians or reasonable facsimiles. (I have to admit, I didn't know until now how much I really was hoping to use the term "reasonable facsimile" in a post until now, and I blame that on my childhood mail-order cereal offers.) The team of Ramone and Joel must have been quite synergetic, given Ramone would go on to produce with Joel into the mid-80's and that recording for this album took only three weeks. That synergy seemed to have carried through to its release, becoming Joel's best-selling album even to this day and earning him 2 Grammy Awards for the single "Just The Way You Are", which were Record Of The Year and Song Of The Year. This is actually the second time that I use Iron Man to represent the Piano Man, and I can't help but think after a few whiskey drinks, Tony Stark pretends he could beat Joel in a piano-off. The first ever, I imagine. #billyjoel #thestranger #columbiarecords #classicrock #pianoman #marvel #ironman #justthewayyouare

Vices & Virtues is the third studio album by Panic! at the Disco, released in March 2011. This is the first album after the departure of lead guitarist, backing vocalist and primary lyricist, Ryan Ross as well as bassist and backing vocalist John Walker. This means we're left with lead vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Brendon Urie and drummer Spencer Smith. Around late June 2009, Smith and Ross sat down and agreed a split would be good for them, since Urie wanted to pursue a more polished pop sound for the band and Ross was hoping to explore retro-inspired rock. This would ultimately lead to Urie and Smith to start the next album from scratch, starting with song material. They had to come out of their shell a little bit and become more aware of the world around them to inspire lyrics that were honest and straightforward. Producers John Feldmann and Butch Walker were new to the duo, but they quickly assured Urie and Smith that this was their album, and they are solely there to help them achieve their new direction. The album took two years in total, which explains how there are notable differences between the songs, since it's practically a progression of them rebuilding Panic! from the ground. Reviews were mostly positive, if not optimistic, that Urie and Smith had a handle on things, and most of the negative feedback just touched on Urie's lyricism, but the album still presented a solid effort, especially given the personal and professional hurdles. Tonight we've got another classic duo of Wolverine and the Punisher, getting ramped up for a night of crime fighting with the second track on the album, "Let's Kill Tonight". Whoa, boys. Good luck, crime doers! #panicatthedisco #vicesandvirtues #altrock #poprock #emopop #synthpop #marvel #wolverine #punisher #decaydancerecords

"Is This It" is the debut studio album by the Strokes, released in June 2001. Rewind to 1997, family members of the band played a large part in guiding their musical tastes by having them listen to Bob Marley, the Velvet Underground and Jane's Addiction. They took music classes, wrote some songs, and wanted to see how it all sounded when it all came together. In 2000, a demo was recorded and caught enough attention to have the band booked at New York City's Mercury Lounge for some gigs in December, and eventually recorded a 3-track EP titled "The Modern Age", which British label Rough Trade Records released in January 2001. The band had a great response to it, and inked a deal with RCA Records not long after. They started off recording with Pixies producer Gil Norton, but felt Norton was trying to push a cleaner sound than the band was aiming for. They decided to part ways, and called up another producer, Gordon Raphael, who helped the band truly achieve the sound they were hoping for on their first full-length album, from the placement of the microphones to lead singer Julian Casablanca singing through a small Peavey practice amp for a low fidelity output. The album got some great reviews and commercial success behind it pretty much immediately, entering the UK Albums Chart at number two and the Billboard 200 at number seventy-four, while being named the best album of 2001 by Billboard, CMJ, Entertainment Weekly, NME, Playlouder, and more. Deadpool stole Namor's hands again for tonight's post, trying to nail the position of the lady on the International cover version for the album. #thestrokes #isthisit #debutalbum #rcarecords #postpunk #indierock #garagerock #marvel #deadpool

Gravitron is the sixth studio album by The Atomic Bitchwax, released in 2015. We're a few changes into the band's lineup by now, where we have Finn Ryan on vocals and guitar, then Chris Kosnick giving us vocals and bass, and rounding off with Bob Pantella on drums and percussion. Kosnick and Pantella are on double-duty at this point, playing for both The Atomic Bitchwax and Monster Magnet. Ryan's voice kinda gives a Foo Fighter feeling to the album, while Kosnick and Pantella add in the harder edged Monster Magnet sound. Iron Man made the mistake of leaving this album in his sound system, and so he found Mary Jane passed out, having obviously hit up his liquor cabinet and had a rager all on her own.. Thankfully, he has a special setting on his repulsors that can help her sober up at the flick of his wrists, literally. Iron Man is always ready! #theatomicbitchwax #gravitron #teepeerecords #hardrock #psychedelicrock #stonerrock #marvel #maryjanewatson #ironman
Thanks @ratedalbums for featuring this one a while back so I could give it my own spin (vinyl pun intended)

Constrictor is the sixteenth studio album by Alice Cooper, released in September 1986. Cooper's previous four albums were dubbed his "blackout albums", because he had no recollection of recording them due to heavy drinking and drug abuse. By mid-1983, while recording the album before this one, titled "DaDa", he had been hospitalized for alcoholism and cirrhosis of the liver. Although they were able to finish recording once he had recovered, "DaDa" and its predecessor wouldn't even scratch the Billboard 200. But there is a silver lining in that Cooper had finally chosen to go sober and has been since. He took a break from the music business to get his affairs in order, from remaining sober to divorcing but then reconciling with his wife Sheryl Cooper. By the end of 1984, Cooper had begun writing songs again and by 1985 he had been signed on by MCA Records. All this would lead up to teaming up with guitarist Kane Roberts, who co-wrote nearly every song with Cooper for the remainder of the 1980s, and also Kip Winger, who would move on to forming his own band, Winger. Cooper was back on his game and had a successful tour to accompany the album. Two songs from the album were also used in the movie "Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives", which are "Teenage Frankenstein" and "He's Back (The Man Behind the Mask)". Speaking of things coming back from the dead, Deadpool was messing around with my old Spider-Man 2 Doctor Octopus figure, and looks like the tentacles has some life left in them yet.

Oxnard is the third studio album by Anderson Paak, released in November 2018. This is Paak's first album under Dr Dre's Aftermath Entertainment and Doug Morris' label 12 Tone Music, and also the third album in his "beach series" with the first two being "Venice" and "Malibu". With the support of Aftermath, Dr Dre was heavily involved in the production process, and Paak admitted feeling like he had finally released the album he had been dreaming about since high school, when he was listening to Jay-Z's The Blueprint, The Game's Documentary and Kanye West's The College Dropout. I hadn't listened to Paak all that much prior to this post, but after setting up this picture for @weirdvinylgirl 's Top 30 of 2018 (go check it out!), I find the whole album has such a solid groove throughout, and the collaborations with Kendrick Lamar, Pusha T, Snoop Dogg and Dr Dre himself gave Paak a great creative environment to thrive in and he didn't take it for granted. The track "Smile/Petty" leads with "What is it about my smile that makes you lie to my face?", but there's something about the Joker's smile that might have me lie, but would most likely have me need to change my underwear, and pants. #andersonpaak #oxnard #aftermathentertainment #12tonemusic #randb #hiphop #funk #soulmusic #dccomics #joker #thejoker

24k Magic is the third studio album by Bruno Mars, released in November, 2016. After the success of his previous album, Unorthodox Jukebox, fans had been waiting for the next album and Mars couldn't give them an exact date because he wanted it done to his standards. He was looking to pay tribute to, and capture the feel of, the sounds he grew up with, which was mostly 90's R&B from the likes of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men. Being a perfectionist, Mars had his hand in pretty much every level of recording and production, and even formed a production trio named Shampoo Press & Curl, which included Brody Brown, Philip Lawrence and himself. Everyone that came in to work with Mars had nothing but praise for his vision and focus, which is how he was able to convince his label, Atlantic Records, about this relatively new direction he wanted to take his next musical chapter. I doubt Atlantic regrets anything, since the album debuted at number 2 on the Billboard 200, and held the number one spot for 8 non-consecutive weeks on the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. Reviews and accolades were just as positive, with the latter coming in the form of 3 Grammy Awards: "Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical", "Best R&B Album" and "Album of the Year". The stylized title of the album is XXIVk Magic, and so tonight Tony Stark is suiting up in his Mark XXIVk suit he appropriately dubbed "Magic". #brunomars #24kmagic #randb #soulmusic #funk #popmusic #marvel #ironman

In the Court of the Crimson King is the debut album by King Crimson, released in 1969. Crimson King had become a breakout success after they appeared at the free Rolling Stones concert at Hyde Park, London in July 1969. The band had started recording the album earlier in the year, working double duty as musicians and producers with the help of two sound engineers, Robin Thompson and Tony Page. The tracks were recorded on a 1" 8-channel recorder, and band member Ian McDonald tasked himself with overdubbing layers of Mellotron, as well as various woodwind and reed instruments to give an orchestral feel in the recording. Even though the album initially came out to mixed reviews, it's become known as one of the first and most influential of the progressive rock genre, combining elements of jazz, classical and symphonic music, while stepping away from rock's blues influences. The face on the album cover is the Schizoid Man from the lead track "21st Century Schizoid Man", painted by computer programmer Barry Godber, but tonight he's the face of someone who was stuck behind Namor in a Hot Yoga class. #kingcrimson #inthecourtofthecrimsonking #atlanticrecords #progrock #progressiverock #marvel #namor #hotyoga #500thpost

Street Songs is the fifth album by Rick James, released in 1981. This would be the most successful album released by James, with hit singles such as "Give It to Me Baby" and "Super Freak", which both charted in the top 5 on the Billboard Hot R&B. The album went four times platinum by 1983 and also received some Grammy attention in the form of a nomination for Best Male Rhythm and Blues Vocal Performance, and also Best Male Rock Vocal Performance for "Super Freak", the first ever for a black male artist. They also saw new life when "Give It to Me Baby" was sampled in songs by DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, MC Hammer and Common, while "Super Freak" was sampled for Jay-Z's "Kingdom Come" and MC Hammer's "U Can't Touch This". There's something taking over Thor tonight after having drunk this entire bottle of Crystal Head Vodka, as he does his best Dave Chappelle's Rick James impression: "I'm Thor Odinson, Beer Wench!". I think it's time he calls it a night. #rickjames #streetsongs #soulmusic #funkmusic #gordyrecords #marvel #thor #crystalheadvodka #vodka
Thanks @radiohitch for making this album pop up in my feed so I could give it my own feature!
