POETIC DIMENSIONS:
Render, Resonance and Reimagine
—
Artist Yun-Chin, also known as Raw 2.2 (@raw2.2), was born in Taiwan and raised in Shanghai. Growing up accepting her mental health issues, the artist has shifted her practice from social-politically charged to more inward communicative throughout the past year. She presents Hell Express and Trash Girl as communicative tools to appropriately express the internal irrationality. Yun-Chin will keep exploring the truth of mental issues in the context of art.
•
Work: Yun-Chin/Raw 2.2, Hell Express: Educational Therapy Program
Now on view at Leyden Gallery from 23 to 27 April, 2019.

Assuming both the insider and outsider in understanding the possibilities in dimensions, the essence of Anny Yan (@smashedgateaux) ’s artistic practice strives towards finding a peaceful balance in a seemingly interruptive or sceptical situation. Her installation work explains a teaching ‘the mind remains calm if intended even when the outside is in turmoil’, taken from Chinese ancient literature. The paintings, on the other hand, draw research from Buddhist teachings proposed as a theory that ’man is an integral part of nature‘.

Inspired by Edmund Gustav Albrecht Husserl’s idea of ‘epoche’ in his study of phenomenology, the surreal works of Yaoer Zeng (@x_i_i_1_2) allow the audiences to participate in the practice itself and become part of it. They are also reimaginations of the product image style of Taobao (China eBay), which is formed by the coincidence of photoshop techniques, eye-catching colours, consumerism's industrial chain and China's social background, known as the ‘Taobao aesthetics’ in the words of artist Kim Laughston.

This project is an investigation led by Yifu Liu (@yifu_6) on the future object-human relationship. The designer (artist) positions himself as a context-driven being, who concerns about the contextual narratives and critical value beyond practical functions. The concept of ‘togetherness’ is thus realised and transferred into this design of a future public coffee machine that can only be used in a shared condition.

Johannah Muriel (@johannahmuriel) is a Hackney-based artist and printmaker. Her mixed-media studies are mainly concerned with paint and colour forming organically as paper emerges through the printing press.

Johannah’s prints are the result of instinctive reactions to mainly natural references- inspiration taken from nature, everyday life or beauty found in decaying objects discarded by others. Works document the unpremeditated journey of oil paint as impulsive mark making hits the paper.

Detailed hand-embroidery manifests on paper into organic forms- it’s delicate application working in deliberate contrast to the prints’ spontaneity of colour and abstract shape formations.

Frank Walter was born in Antigua in 1926. He died in 2009 and, having never exhibited in his lifetime, represented Antigua and Barbuda at the 2017 Venice Biennale.
Frank Walter’s gifts were the product of a fertile, but fragile, mind. He spent the last years of his life in a shack on an Antiguan hillside where he lived in self-imposed isolation surrounded by the extraordinary paintings that speak with such an unmistakable and visionary voice. In particular his gloriously fresh and directly painted landscapes have an anthropomorphic quality - as if he were painting his friends, or recording a kind of companionship still offered by trees when people had long since let him down. Painted with a rare immediacy, on whatever material came to hand, they announce the discovery of one of the most intriguing and distinctive Caribbean artists of the last 50 years.

James Hugonin, who was born in England in 1950, makes abstract paintings composed of marks of close toned colour over an underlying grid, each mark shifting slightly from its neighbour, and building to a rhythmic whole. These are deeply subtle paintings with an understated clarity: quietly musical, and filled with a kind of contained light that relates keenly to the place in which they are made. There is a slow and deliberate colour notation that forms an integral part of the making of each work, which emerge very slowly from the studio: each taking 15-16 months to complete.

Peter Liversidge was born in England in 1973 and specialises in slyly poetic transformations of ordinary things. His stone heads are made of the most mundane of materials, pebbles collected on walks – deliberately banal, almost stupid, and yet somehow conveying huge character. Also on the booth is a group of gilded masks, resonant of the kind of ceremonial masks perhaps found in ancient Inca and Pre-Columbian cultures, but made from thrown away pieces of card or wood with a physiognomically suggestive shape.

Callum Innes, who was born in Scotland in 1962, is one of Scotland’s leading painters. His works are made by layering oil paint onto the canvas and then removing the pigment with washes of turpentine - a process of un-painting, as well as painting, in which the controlled hand of the artist is balanced by the potential chaos of chance. This ongoing enquiry into the interplay between the addition and subtraction of pigment has come to define a new and significant language of abstraction.

• Work: Callum Innes, Exposed Painting Deep Violet, oil on linen, 2018 Now on view at Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre, Ingleby Booth 3C10 from 29 to 31 March, 2019. • #ANDInspirations #Art #ContemporaryArt #ArtBasel #ArtBaselHK2019 #InglebyGallery #CallumInnes - 2 months ago

Kevin Harman was born in Scotland in 1982. Positioned somewhere between painting and sculpture Kevin Harman’s abstractions are at once seductively beautiful and challengingly physical. They have their origins in a found object, in this case double-glazing units, which the artist splits in order to pour, layer and drip household paint onto the interior cavity. The resulting images balance the artist’s intentions with moments of chance, and a sense of the final object being something entirely new – a window that defies logic, a surface that is simultaneously opaque and flat, but with apparently swimming depths.
