At Art Basel Hong Kong 2019 with Ingleby Gallery
Frank Walter was born in Antigua in 1926. He died in 2009 and, having never exhibited in his lifetime, represented Antigua and Barbuda at the 2017 Venice Biennale.
Frank Walter’s gifts were the product of a fertile, but fragile, mind. He spent the last years of his life in a shack on an Antiguan hillside where he lived in self-imposed isolation surrounded by the extraordinary paintings that speak with such an unmistakable and visionary voice. In particular his gloriously fresh and directly painted landscapes have an anthropomorphic quality - as if he were painting his friends, or recording a kind of companionship still offered by trees when people had long since let him down. Painted with a rare immediacy, on whatever material came to hand, they announce the discovery of one of the most intriguing and distinctive Caribbean artists of the last 50 years.
