If you missed the original airing of the @ncisla episode #1018 “Born To Run” last Sunday, check your local listings to catch me on horseback giving my best WTF to Kensi and the gang!
A lot of people have asked, “If you’re an ethical vegan, how can you ride a horse?” I’ve put a lot of thought into this over the years. I started riding horses at 8 years old. Even worked in a barn so I could ride more regularly and just be around the healing energy of these animals that I love so much during very challenging and traumatic times in my youth. As a vegan for the past 12 years, I’ve transitioned step by step into a life that utilizes animals as little as possible to none. I stopped eating flesh, then animal products like dairy & eggs, then cleared all animal byproducts from my household and self-care items, and fur & skin from my wardrobe and accessories. Horseback riding has been the crux of my internal debate for the last two years and I’ve not ridden since it was brought to my attention, though unfortunately with a great deal of judgement by said individual. This job opportunity came up and I had to really think about it.
My conclusion was this: this episode is going to get made with or without me. At least if I am the one on the horse, I’ll know he will be getting the best treatment possible by his costar. Just because someone knows how to ride does not mean they are kind to the animal whose back they mount. I was thrilled to find out I got the position for this very reason and Tuff was one of my favorite scene partners to work with. However, my internal debate and my vegan journey continues.
Let us try to always remember that we are meeting everyone at a single point in their journey. A moment. It is not definitive and there are myriad factors in any one scenario affecting decisions that may seem simple on the surface. Spread only love, peace and acceptance and that will be what grows in the world. - 22 days ago
